Samsung Appeals to Agitating Employees to Resume Work Amid Ongoing Protests in Tamil Nadu

Samsung has urged its workers in Tamil Nadu to return to work after protests disrupted operations since 9 September. The company assured employees that no action would be taken against those who resume duties but warned of termination for continued protests. Approximately 1,000 workers from the Samsung India Workers Union, supported by CITU, have been striking for demands like wage revision and better work hours.

Samsung Urges Workers to Return to Work

Samsung's Communication to Workers

In a recent communication, Samsung stated that the strike is illegal and encouraged resolving issues through dialogue. The company noted a lack of response from workers when discussions were proposed. Operations at the Sriperumbudur factory, located about 45 km away, have been impacted due to the ongoing agitation.

Samsung clarified that workers participating in the strike would not receive pay for the days missed since 9 September, adhering to a "No Work, No Pay" policy. Employees forced into the strike were advised to contact human resources. If protests continue, workers must justify why their salaries should not be deducted for the past 11 days.

Union's Response and Demands

CITU Sriperumbudur district secretary E Muthukumar, leading the strike, denied Samsung's claims about negotiation readiness. He stated that the management had not responded to their demands, prompting the legal strike. Muthukumar called for government intervention to resolve the issue without delay.

Samsung India manufactures consumer durables at this 16-year-old facility with around 1,800 workers. The company reiterated its commitment to worker safety and resolving the issue promptly. A spokesperson emphasised that policies are communicated based on relevant laws and regulations.

The notice signed by Samsung's General Manager warned employees that failure to respond within four days of receiving it—by 23 September—could result in termination. Meanwhile, Samsung acknowledged the impact on factory operations due to the strike and issued a circular addressing this matter.

Samsung has prioritised worker safety and well-being while urging employees to return to work immediately. The company remains committed to resolving the ongoing issues through appropriate channels and negotiations.
