Fraudsters today are continually developing innovative strategies to scam people in ways never imagined before. In one of the recent updates, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a crucial alert regarding a new scam targeting customers of the State Bank of India (SBI). This advisory from the Government of India warns users about fake messages that ask them to download an app in order to redeem "SBI rewardz," which they have no idea about.

In its recent post on the X handler The SBI Bank of India has warned its customers of the fraudulent messages that are received by its customers. The SBI post on X.com said, "It is observed that fraudsters are sending messages and APKs over SMS or WhatsApp for redeeming SBI Rewards points. Please note that SBI never shares such messages and APKs over SMS or WhatsApp. Do not click on any such links or download unknown files."Understanding the SBI Rewards Scam
The scam typically begins with a text message as shared by PIB on its social handle, often sent via platforms like WhatsApp, claiming that the recipient has accumulated "SBI NetBanking Reward Points." To redeem these points, users are instructed to download an app named "SBI Reward," with the false assurance that the funds will be deposited directly into their bank accounts. The convincing nature of these messages, which often incorporate SBI's name, branding, and familiar terminology, can lead unsuspecting individuals to trust and act on them, resulting in significant financial losses.
The purpose of this message is to scam uninformed people. By following the provided instructions, users risk unintentionally downloading harmful software or APK files that are specifically created to capture personal information, such as passwords, banking details, and other confidential data. Cybersecurity specialists have time and again issued warnings about these APK files, as they can easily jeopardize device security, giving hackers the remote access to extract sensitive information without the user's awareness.
Precautions to Protect Yourself
To safeguard sensitive information Here are some of the steps you can take to protect yourself from such scams:
- Avoid Clicking on Links or download files sent via SMS or WhatsApp, especially if they come from unknown sources or promise rewards that seem too good to be true.
- Downloading apps from trusted sources and using official channels for redeeming such rewards
As cyber fraud continues to rise, various government organizations are implementing new and enhanced measures to combat it. By following the recommended guidelines, you can effectively protect yourself from these scams. Adhering to recommended precautions laid out by the banks can help you protect against potential scams and ensure a secure online banking experience.
