A new fake message is doing the rounds on WhatsApp and other social media platforms, claiming that customers' SBI YONO app will be blocked if they do not immediately update their Aadhaar details. The message, sent in the name of State Bank of India (SBI), asks users to download an APK file and update their KYC through it.

The message looks like an official alert and even uses the SBI logo and "SBI YONO" branding, but the government's PIB Fact Check unit has now confirmed that this claim is completely fake. SBI never asks its customers to update KYC or Aadhaar through unauthorised links or third-party APK files.
How the SBI Aadhaar Update Scam Works
According to the fraudulent alert, users must install an external application to avoid their SBI YONO app being blocked. The scam message claims, "Your SBI YONO account will be blocked tonight due to Aadhaar not being updated." It then urges users to download a suspicious APK file. This is a classic phishing tactic used by cybercriminals to steal personal and financial data.
In its clarification, PIB Fact Check stated, "This claim is FAKE. Do not download any APKs or share personal, banking, or Aadhaar details. SBI does not ask for such information." The agency has urged citizens to ignore the fake SBI KYC update message and avoid clicking on unknown links sent via WhatsApp, SMS or email.
SBI, through its official handle, has also said the same, that customers should never install banking apps from unverified sources, emphasising that the SBI YONO KYC update must only be done through official channels, either via the SBI branch, the YONO app downloaded from the App Store/Google Play Store, or the official SBI website.
What Customers Should Do
Users who receive such messages are advised to not click on the suspicious link and not download any APK files. Additionally, do not share Aadhaar, bank details, OTPs, PINs or CVV numbers. Customers should report phishing attempts to SBI at report. [email protected] and block and delete the sender immediately.
If users have already downloaded the fake APK or shared information, they must contact SBI customer care or their nearest branch immediately and secure their accounts.
There is already an increase in digital banking and UPI usage, and scammers are trying new ways to trick people using fake logos, fake messages and fake apps. Customers are advised to trust only official bank apps, never install banking-related APKs from unknown sources, and always verify any alarming message through official channels. So all in all, your SBI YONO account will NOT be blocked just because you didn't click on a random link. But your money can definitely be at risk if you do.
