October brings a festive break for students and teachers in many Indian states. After Dussehra, schools in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra close for Diwali and related festivities like Dhanteras, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj. These holidays allow families to celebrate together before academic activities resume later in the month.

Diwali 2025 School Holidays
Schools will remain shut for six days from this weekend. There will be school holiday on Dhanteras on October 18, onwards. Diwali week holidays will conclude on Bhai Dooj on October 23.
This period includes key celebrations such as Chhoti Diwali, the main Diwali day, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj. In eastern India, Kali Puja is also celebrated during this time. However, the six-day Diwali week holiday may vary from state to state.
Diwali School Holidays May Vary From State To State
According to an Indian Express report, Diwali holidays in Jammu and Kashmir will be for five days. All educational institutions up to higher secondary level will be closed from October 19 to November 2. The University of Jammu has also postponed exams scheduled for October 20, 22, and 23, reported Indian Express.
In Punjab, schools will observe a four-day break from October 19 to October 22. This period starts with a Sunday holiday on October 19, followed by Diwali on October 20. Most schools will have a post-Diwali holiday on October 21, concluding with Vishwakarma Puja on October 22.
Delhi, UP, Bengal, School Holidays
Delhi's schools are expected to close on October 20 for Diwali and again on October 22 for Govardhan Puja as per IE report. Schools will remain shut from October 20 to October 23 in Uttar Pradesh. Whereas, 19 October will be a holiday because of Sunday.
Diwali, Chhath School Holidays in Bihar
Bihar's schools will remain closed during Diwali festivities with additional holidays planned before Chhath Puja. In West Bengal, schools will shut from October 20 to October 23 covering Kali Puja on the first day and Bhai Dooj on the last.
Diwali School Holiday in Assam, Odisha
Assam and Odisha both observe school closures on October 20 for Diwali and Kali Puja. Maharashtra typically schedules school holidays from October 18 to October 21 but may extend them to include Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj on subsequent days.
Delhi School Holiday in Karnataka
Schools will remain closed in Bengaluru and other Karnataka cities from October 8 to October 18 due to teachers' participation in the caste survey, IE added in its report. Naraka Chaturdashi on October 20 and Balipadyami (Deepavali) on October 22 are official holidays in the state.
