Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited has entered into an agreement with Rederiet Stenersen AS for the construction of six chemical tankers. This deal, valued at USD 220 million, highlights India's growing shipbuilding capabilities and includes an option for six additional vessels.
Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI) announced on Monday that it has entered into an agreement with Rederiet Stenersen AS, a European ship owner and operator. This agreement involves the construction of six chemical tankers, each with a deadweight of 18,000 tonnes. The deal is valued at around USD 220 million and includes an option for six additional ships of the same class.

Shipbuilding Milestone for India
This letter of intent signifies a significant achievement for India's shipbuilding export sector. The vessels will be constructed at SDHI's advanced facility located in Pipavav, Gujarat. According to the company statement, these ships will be designed by Marinform AS from Norway and will be classified by DNV.
The vessels are set to meet Ice Class 1A standards and will incorporate a sophisticated hybrid propulsion system. This system is designed to enhance operational modes through advanced automation, offering improved manoeuvrability, reduced emissions, and greater operational flexibility.
Global Confidence in Indian Shipbuilding
Vivek Merchant, Director at SDHI, remarked on the contract by stating, "The trust placed in us by Rederiet Stenersen AS reflects global confidence in India’s shipbuilding capabilities and SDHI’s commitment to deliver world-class, future-ready vessels." This highlights the growing international trust in India's shipbuilding industry.
Rederiet Stenersen AS was founded in 1974 and currently owns and operates a fleet of 19 chemical/product tankers. These tankers range from 16,000 to 19,000 DWT and primarily operate in Northern Europe. The collaboration with SDHI marks a new chapter in their operations, expanding their fleet with state-of-the-art vessels built in India.
The agreement between SDHI and Rederiet Stenersen AS not only strengthens ties between the two companies but also underscores India's potential as a key player in the global shipbuilding market.
