In a significant move towards bolstering India's clean energy sector, the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has initiated a process to secure an annual supply of 5.39 lakh metric tonnes of green ammonia. This initiative is part of the SIGHT Programme under the ambit of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), which is spearheaded by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE). The SECI's Request for Selection (RfS) aims to identify green ammonia producers through a transparent and competitive bidding process, marking a pivotal step in India's journey towards sustainable energy solutions.

The selection process for green ammonia producers will be conducted via an e-bidding mechanism, followed by an e-Reverse Auction. This method ensures a fair and efficient selection process, catering to the annual requirement of 5.39 lakh Metric Tonnes of green ammonia. The produced green ammonia is earmarked for supply to fertilizer companies, highlighting the interconnectedness of India's clean energy goals with its agricultural sector.
Green Hydrogen Mission: A Leap Towards Clean Energy
The MNRE had previously outlined the Scheme Guidelines for the implementation of the SIGHT Programme – Component II, which focuses on incentivizing the procurement of green ammonia production under Mode 2A of the NGHM. As the implementing agency, SECI plays a crucial role in this scheme. The NGHM, launched on January 4, 2023, with a budget allocation of Rs. 19,744 crores extending up to FY 2029-30, is designed to significantly reduce carbon emissions and decrease reliance on fossil fuel imports. This mission not only supports India's ambition to achieve self-reliance through clean energy but also positions the country as a leader in green hydrogen technology and market dynamics globally.
Under the SIGHT Programme, the MNRE has already allocated resources towards enhancing green hydrogen production capacity by 4.12 lakh Metric Tonnes per annum and electrolyzer manufacturing capacity by 1.5 GW per annum. These allocations are instrumental in achieving India's clean energy objectives and facilitating a substantial decarbonization of its economy.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission underscores India's commitment to leading by example in the global clean energy transition. By focusing on green hydrogen and ammonia production, India aims not only to meet its energy requirements sustainably but also to establish a blueprint for other nations to follow in their clean energy endeavors.
