Sembcorp Industries Inaugurates Largest Utility-Scale Solar Farm in Oman to Support Renewable Energy Goals

Sembcorp Industries, based in Singapore, has unveiled a 588 MW solar power project in Oman. The inauguration was led by Bilarab bin Haitham Al Said from the Royal Family, who is the second son of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq. This development marks Sembcorp's first greenfield renewables project in the Middle East and stands as the largest utility-scale solar farm within its global renewables portfolio.

Sembcorp Launches Major Solar Farm in Oman

The Manah 2 Solar Power Plant represents a significant step in Sembcorp's dedication to supporting Oman's sustainable future. It also strengthens their collaboration with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company. "As Sembcorp's largest utility-scale solar plant globally, it supports Oman's Vision 2040 by advancing the nation's renewable energy targets," stated Vipul Tuli, CEO of Sembcorp Industries for the Middle East and Chairman for South Asia.

Oman’s Renewable Energy Goals

The solar plant will supply clean energy to around 60,000 households, significantly reducing carbon emissions. Dr Maliki Osman, Singapore Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of Education and Foreign Affairs, noted that "Sembcorp's latest successful project in Oman has impressively commenced operations four months ahead of schedule." This project aligns with Oman's renewable energy and net zero emission objectives.

A key component of this initiative is a 20-year power purchase agreement with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company. This agreement covers 500 MW, with Nama being the exclusive procurer for all electricity generation in Oman. The plant spans 6.8 million square metres and uses over one million bi-facial photovoltaic solar panels to maximise sunlight capture.

Technological Integration and Future Plans

Sembcorp will integrate its proprietary digital energy asset management platform, NetZeroOS, for real-time monitoring and predictive analysis at the plant. This technology ensures efficient operation and maximises energy output. In August 2024, Sembcorp held a groundbreaking ceremony for a green ammonia plant in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. This facility will produce 2 lakh metric tonnes of green ammonia annually for export to Japan.

The launch of the Manah 2 Solar Power Plant is a pivotal moment for Sembcorp Industries as it expands its renewable energy footprint in the Middle East. The project not only contributes to Oman's energy goals but also showcases Sembcorp's commitment to sustainable development on a global scale.
