Sensex Ends 605 Points Higher; HDFC Twins Lead

Benchmark indices saw a solid rally as global cues were strong and Dow Futures pointed to higher openings for the US markets.

The Sensex ended the day higher by 605 points, while the Nifty jumped 171 points in trade. HDFC twins, which are a heavyweights in the index were responsible for a large part of the gains in the markets.

HDFC Bank jumped almost 7 per cent in trade, while HDFC bank gained as much as 5 per cent. Shares in Axis Bank bucked the market trend and ended the day sharply lower by more than 3 per cent, as its results failed to meet market expectations.

From among the non index stocks, Bandhan Bank was a big gainer rallying almost 6 per cent in trade.

Asian Paints, Hindustan Unilever and dr Reddy's were among the losers from the Nifty space.

Meanwhile, most European markets were trading with gains, while the US markets were pointing to higher openings.
