A study conducted by vivo and Cybermedia Research highlights the growing concerns among parents regarding their childrens mental health due to smartphone usage. With 94% of parents expressing deep apprehension, the study sheds light on the impact of excessive screen time on family dynamics and childrens overall development.
A recent study conducted by mobile devices firm vivo and Cybermedia Research has revealed that a significant majority of parents in India are deeply concerned about the impact of smartphone usage on their children's mental health. The study, titled "vivo Switch Off Research," surveyed 1,500 individuals, including 1,000 parents and 500 children, and found that 94% of parents expressed deep concerns about their children's mental health due to smartphone exposure.
Smartphone Usage and Parental Concerns
The study highlights several key findings regarding smartphone usage among parents and children in India. It reveals that parents use smartphones for an average of 7.7 hours every day, and 90% of them get irritated when their children ask for something while they are engrossed in their smartphones. This excessive smartphone usage by parents is seen as a major factor contributing to the concerns about children's mental health.
Impact on Children's Mental Health
The study emphasizes the negative impact of smartphone usage on children's mental health. An overwhelming 91% of parents worry that excessive smartphone use might negatively affect their children's social skills, and 91% of children experience anxiety when they are separated from their phones. Additionally, the majority of children feel lonely and agree that excessive usage takes a toll on their mental health.
Smartphone Usage Patterns among Children
The study also sheds light on the smartphone usage patterns among children in India. On average, children initiate smartphone usage at the age of 12 and spend approximately 6.5 hours daily on their devices. Gaming is the predominant activity, with around 60% of children using their smartphones for infotainment purposes. However, 58% of children find smartphones convenient for connecting with friends, family, and relatives who live far away.
Parental Views on Smartphone Misuse
A significant majority of parents (92%) agree that children are misusing their smartphones. This concern stems from the observation that children often get so lost in the smartphone world that they ignore the real world around them. As a result, almost all children feel guilty about the quality of their relationship with their parents and feel lonely because of their parents' smartphone usage.
The vivo Switch Off Research study underscores the growing concerns among parents in India regarding the impact of smartphone usage on their children's mental health. The findings highlight the need for parents to be mindful of their own smartphone usage and to impose reasonable restrictions on their children's access to smartphones. By promoting responsible smartphone usage and encouraging meaningful interactions, parents can help ensure the well-being and healthy development of their children.
