Smartphone Screen Protectors To Need BIS Certification; Check What Changes For Buyers & Sellers
Smartphone screen protectors will come under a new quality compliance requirement in India, with the government making Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification mandatory for the category from April 1, 2027. The move will bring tempered glass and other smartphone screen protectors under a formal quality standards framework.
Smartphone Screen Protectors To Need BIS Certification; Check What Changes For Buyers, Sellers
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has added "screen protectors for smartphones" to the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021. The change was notified through a Gazette notification dated September 21, 2026.

The new requirement will affect manufacturers, importers, brands, distributors and other businesses involved in selling covered screen protectors in India. Companies have been given time until March 31, 2027, to complete the necessary preparations.
BIS Certification For Screen Protectors: What Is Changing?
From April 1, 2027, smartphone screen protectors covered by the notification will have to conform to the specified Indian Standard and meet the applicable compulsory registration requirements before being sold in the Indian market.
This means businesses will need to ensure that their products comply with the prescribed quality requirements and complete the necessary certification and registration process. Screen protectors that do not meet the applicable requirements will not be allowed to be sold after the compliance deadline.
The category has now become the 66th item added under the compulsory registration order. The framework already covers a range of electronic and IT products, including smartphones, laptops, chargers, LED televisions, microwave ovens, printers and set-top boxes.
The smartphone accessory market in India is large and fragmented, with screen protectors sold through mobile shops, repair outlets, electronics stores, e-commerce platforms and other retail channels.
The mandatory standard is expected to bring greater uniformity to the quality of products available in the market. It can also improve traceability and make it easier for buyers to distinguish products that meet a defined Indian quality standard from those that do not.
At present, screen protectors are available across a wide range of prices and quality levels. Consumers often rely on brand claims, retailer descriptions or packaging information when choosing a product. The new framework will establish a formal standard that covered products must meet.
New BIS Rule Impact Sellers And Importers
Manufacturers and importers will need to review their products, suppliers and testing arrangements ahead of the deadline. Businesses sourcing screen protectors from overseas suppliers may also have to ensure that the products they bring into India comply with the applicable standard and registration requirements.
Small brands and sellers could face a higher compliance burden, particularly those operating with low-cost products or fragmented supply chains. They may need to make changes to sourcing, documentation, testing, packaging and product labelling before the rule takes effect.
Retailers and e-commerce sellers may also need to ensure that the screen protectors they stock or list comply with the new requirements.
What Does The Rule Mean For Consumers?
For smartphone users, the change could provide a more standardised basis for choosing screen protectors. Products covered by the notification will have to meet the specified Indian Standard once the rule becomes effective.
The move could also reduce the presence of products that do not meet the prescribed quality requirements. However, certification should not be treated as a guarantee that every product will offer identical performance, as factors such as design, installation and usage can also affect how a screen protector performs.
