South Africa Invites Indian Businesses to Explore Investment Opportunities in Key Sectors

Indian businesses have significant investment prospects in South Africa, according to Anil Sooklal, the country's High Commissioner to India. He encouraged South African companies to consider India as a prime investment destination. "Africa is the best place at the moment, It is rising and the gateway into the African continent is South Africa. I invite all business, please come to South Africa," he stated at a Ficci-organised business conclave.

South Africa Seeks Indian Investments in Key Sectors

Yunus Hoosen, Head of Invest South Africa, highlighted potential investments in renewable energy, mining, and manufacturing sectors. A delegation of about 40 South African business representatives is currently visiting India. Bilateral trade between India and South Africa reached USD 19.3 billion in 2023-24, reflecting strong economic ties.

Travel Infrastructure Reforms

South Africa has introduced major changes to its travel infrastructure to boost tourism with India. According to a Ficci statement, the country has launched a new digital entry travel agreement (ETA) system and simplified visa procedures. This move aims to enhance tourism links between the two nations.

Patricia de Lille MP, South African Minister of Tourism, explained that the new ETA system will replace the current e-visa programme. This change leverages technology for a more efficient entry process. The minister also announced discussions with Air India, Indigo, and SpiceJet regarding direct flight routes between the countries.

Restoring Direct Flights

The initiative seeks to re-establish direct flights between Mumbai and Johannesburg. These routes were discontinued in 2015, compelling travellers to transit through Middle Eastern or African hubs. Restoring these connections could significantly ease travel between India and South Africa.

The focus on improving travel links and investment opportunities highlights the growing partnership between India and South Africa. Both countries are working towards strengthening their economic and tourism ties through strategic initiatives and reforms.
