Spirit Airlines shutdown ends 34 years of operations as all flights are cancelled

Spirit Airlines has announced it is going out of business after 34 years and has begun an orderly wind-down effective immediately. The ultralow-cost airline says all flights are cancelled and customer service is unavailable, citing rising oil prices linked to the war with Iran. US officials said refund arrangements are in place for eligible customers.

Spirit Airlines, known for low fares and bold adverts, said on Saturday it had shut down after 34 years. The ultra-low-cost carrier said it began "an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately.\" Spirit said all flights were cancelled and customer service had stopped. Some travellers arrived to find trips scrapped, while staff learnt overnight they had lost jobs.

Spirit Airlines shuts down, flights cancelled

Spirit said rising oil prices made operations impossible, linking the spike to the war with Iran. The airline had gone bankrupt twice before. It once ran hundreds of daily flights on bright yellow planes. Spirit also said it employed about 17,000 people. The website notice said passengers should expect refunds, but no rebooking support.

Spirit Airlines refunds and emergency fares

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Spirit had a reserve fund for refunds. The fund applied to customers who booked directly with the airline. Duffy said people who used third-party sellers, including travel agents, must seek refunds there. Duffy also said United, Delta, JetBlue and Southwest offered $200 one-way flights for a limited time.

Duffy said travellers needed Spirit confirmation numbers and proof of purchase. Duffy added that other airlines would assist Spirit employees who might be stranded. Airlines were also expected to offer a preferential application process. Spirit said it was working to return more than 1,300 crew to home bases after services stopped.

Spirit Airlines last flight and passenger shock

Spirit said its final flight landed at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. In Atlanta on Saturday morning, five Spirit flights still appeared on time on the departure board. Some passengers arrived without hearing the news. \"What!?\" exclaimed Taylor Nantang as the family reached the airport for Miami.

Nantang had travelled with a husband and four children from Tennessee to Atlanta. \"So the whole airline at every airport is out of business?\" asked Nantang. \"Oh my, thats crazy.\" Other passengers asked if phone lines would work and when card refunds would appear. Several said they had received no warning from Spirit.

Joshua Sigler bought a ticket on Friday for a Saturday flight to Miami. Sigler said the cancellation meant returning home instead of using other airlines’ special fares. Sigler said Spirit sent no message before the shutdown. \"They get you there,\" Sigler said of prior trips. \"It was cheap.\"

Spirit Airlines staff learn jobs are gone

Former Spirit flight attendant Freddy Peterson said a Detroit flight reached Newark around 11 p.m. Friday. Peterson said social media rumours circulated, yet the flight felt normal. \"All our aircraft were packed,\" he said. Peterson said checking the website at 3 a.m. confirmed all flights were cancelled.

Peterson, 60, said Delta Air Lines flew Peterson and another attendant to Atlanta on Saturday morning. Peterson said the next step was driving to Shellman in southwest Georgia. \"Ill probably do the boo-hoo crying and all that other stuff once I get in my car.\" Peterson said Spirit \"has done wonders for me.\"

Peterson said the airline’s reputation for chaos was not fully fair. Peterson did criticise management for limited updates to employees near the end. Peterson said a promised employee town hall was cancelled. Many workers learnt overnight that jobs had ended. Spirit’s statement said it was still managing crew returns.

Spirit Airlines bailout talks and Trump comments

The Trump administration weighed a bailout for Spirit, but no agreement was reached. Trump raised the idea last week as the airline entered bankruptcy proceedings again. Jet fuel prices had surged as the Iran war raised costs. Duffy addressed the proposed aid on Saturday, saying, \"We often times dont have half a billion dollars laying around.\"

As late as Friday afternoon, Trump said the administration was still reviewing a rescue. Trump also said Spirit received a final proposal for a taxpayer-funded takeover. Supporters, including labour unions for pilots, flight attendants and ramp workers, warned of job losses. Spirit lawyer Marshall Huebner said about 17,000 jobs could be impacted.

Spirit Airlines finances, debt and passenger numbers

Spirit had struggled since the COVID-19 pandemic, with higher costs and heavier debt. By its Chapter 11 filing in November 2024, Spirit had lost more than $2.5 billion since early 2020. Spirit sought bankruptcy protection again in August 2025. Court filings listed $8.1 billion in debts and $8.6 billion in assets.

The airline also reduced flying sharply, aviation data showed. Spirit carried about 1.7 million domestic passengers in February, Cirium reported. That was roughly half a million fewer than the same month a year earlier. Capacity also fell, with about half as many seats this month than in May 2024.

Spirit Airlines politics, merger debate and fuel costs

The White House had blamed President Joe Bidens administration for Spirit’s weak position. Biden opposed a Spirit and JetBlue merger in 2023. On Saturday, Trump officials used social media to amplify conservative critics. Duffy also blamed Biden and former secretary Pete Buttigieg, saying, \"Many at the time said that this was a disaster. This merger should have been allowed.\"

Tad DeHaven of the Cato Institute said blame did not rest with one decision. DeHaven argued the crisis reflected several policy choices over time. DeHaven pointed to Trumps strike on Iran as poor foreign policy. DeHaven said the conflict pushed fuel prices higher. \"They were already in trouble,\" DeHaven said.

Spirit said its low-cost model affected airline pricing for decades, but the shutdown ended that role. \"We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our guests for many years to come,\" Spirits announcement said. Spirit’s absence may hit leisure routes where it had a large presence.

Spirit’s largest impact may be felt by budget-conscious travellers and holiday flyers. Analysts and unions said reduced competition could raise fares on some routes. The airline had strong footprints in Las Vegas and Florida markets. Those included Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. For now, refunds and limited emergency fares are the main options for stranded customers.
