Spirit Airlines shutdown cancels all flights as customers seek refund guidance

Spirit Airlines has ended operations after 34 years, cancelling all flights and closing customer service. The ultra-low-cost carrier said it is winding down immediately, leaving passengers stranded and staff out of work. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said a reserve fund will support refunds for direct bookings, while third-party purchases must be claimed from sellers.

Spirit Airlines shut down after 34 years, ending operations with immediate effect. The ultra-low-cost carrier said it began "an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately.\" It also said all flights were cancelled. Customer service stopped, and some travellers arrived on Saturday to find trips called off. Workers said they learned overnight that jobs had ended.

Spirit Airlines shutdown cancels flights

On the airline’s website, Spirit said refunds were expected for customers. It also warned there would be no help to rebook on other airlines. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Spirit kept a reserve fund. That fund covered refunds for customers who booked directly. Passengers who used third-party sellers had to seek refunds there.

Spirit Airlines flights cancelled and airport warning

Duffy gave a clear warning to affected passengers. \"If you have a flight scheduled with Spirit Airlines, dont show up at the airport. There will be no one here to assist you, Duffy said.\" He also said United, Delta, JetBlue and Southwest offered $200 one-way fares. The offer applied for a limited time with proof.

At Atlanta, the impact showed up on departure boards. Five Spirit flights still appeared on time on Saturday morning. Some passengers arrived without hearing the news. \"What!?\" exclaimed Taylor Nantang as the family reached the airport. \"So the whole airline at every airport is out of business?\" Nantang asked. \"Oh my, thats crazy.\"

Spirit Airlines crew movement and final flight details

Spirit said it was moving more than 1,300 crew back to home bases. The airline also reported its final flight arrival. It landed at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. It came from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Some passengers also questioned when refunds would hit cards. Others wondered if phone lines would still answer.

Joshua Sigler said the cancellation changed his plans quickly. Sigler bought a ticket on Friday for a Saturday flight to Miami. Sigler said there was no message from Spirit before arriving. Sigler planned to go home instead of chasing other airline deals. \"They get you there,\" Sigler said. \"It was cheap.\"

Spirit Airlines workers react after sudden closure

Freddy Peterson, a former Spirit flight attendant, described the final hours. Peterson flew from Detroit and reached Newark around 11 p.m. Friday. Peterson said rumours were spreading online, yet the flight felt normal. \"All our aircraft were packed, he said.\" More than 200 passengers were on board.

Peterson said the shutdown became clear after checking overnight. \"I said, OK, well, since all this going on, they said Spirit is supposed to close at 3, Im going to bed. I set my alarm clock for 3 oclock, went onto the website and it said, Spirit flights have been canceled, Peterson said.\"

Peterson said Delta Air Lines helped with travel after the closure. Delta flew Peterson and another flight attendant to Atlanta on Saturday morning. Peterson then planned to drive to Shellman in southwest Georgia. \"Ill probably do my boo-hoo crying and all that other stuff once I get in the car.\" Peterson said Spirit \"has done wonders for me.\"

Spirit Airlines bailout talks, bankruptcy and losses

The Trump administration considered a bailout but did not reach a deal. Duffy referred to the possible rescue on Saturday. \"we often times dont have half a billion dollars laying around.\" As late as Friday afternoon, Trump said the administration was still looking. Trump had floated a bailout last week during fresh bankruptcy trouble.

Spirit’s finances worsened after the COVID-19 pandemic, amid higher costs and debt. It filed for Chapter 11 protection in November 2024. By then, it had lost more than $2.5 billion since early 2020. Spirit sought bankruptcy protection again in August 2025. Court filings listed $8.1 billion in debts and $8.6 billion in assets.

Spirit Airlines political blame, merger dispute and fuel costs

The White House blamed the Joe Biden administration for Spirit’s fragile position. Biden opposed a Spirit and JetBlue merger in 2023. On Saturday, Trump officials used social media to boost conservative criticism. Duffy blamed Biden and Pete Buttigieg. \"Many at the time said that this was a disaster. This merger should have been allowed, he said.\"

Tad DeHaven of the Cato Institute said responsibility was broader. DeHaven argued the crisis reflected several policy choices over time. DeHaven criticised Trump’s strike on Iran and called it bad foreign policy. DeHaven said the conflict raised jet fuel prices and Spirit’s costs. \"They were already in trouble, DeHaven said,\" describing a compounding effect.

Labour unions backed a rescue and warned of job losses and weaker competition. Spirit employed about 17,000 people, and that figure could be affected. Spirit lawyer Marshall Huebner cited the same number. The airline’s absence could hit leisure and budget travellers. Cirium said Spirit flew about 1.7 million domestic passengers in February, about 500,000 fewer year on year.

Spirit also cut capacity sharply in recent months. Cirium data showed about half as many seats this month than in May 2024. The airline had once run hundreds of daily flights using bright yellow planes. Its statement reflected on that history and its pricing role. \"We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our guests for many years to come, Spirits announcement said.\"
