Sports Ministry Suspends Paralympic Committee Of India Over Delay In Executive Committee Election

The Sports Ministry has taken the decision to suspend the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) on February 3, citing delays in conducting elections for its executive committee. The move comes after the PCI opted to hold elections on March 28, 2024, despite the existing committee's tenure ending on January 31, 2024.

The Sports Ministry, in a statement, highlighted that the suspension was a result of "procedural irregularities surrounding election scheduling and adherence to regulatory frameworks." According to the ministry, the PCI's decision to postpone elections by almost two months after the expiry of the previous Executive Committee's term was a deliberate and willful violation of established norms.

"The PCI was well aware that the term of the Executive Committee was only up to 31.01.2024. Its decision to hold the election on 28.03.2024 is willful, intentional and without any valid reason. Such failure undermines the democratic process and the principles of good governance as mandated under the National Sports Development Code of India," the statement emphasized.

The Sports Ministry stressed the importance of compliance with the Sports Code to ensure transparent and democratic governance in Indian sports, aligning with other National Sports Federations. The decision to suspend the PCI reflects the government's commitment to upholding the integrity of sports administration and adherence to established regulations.

The statement further clarified that the elections for a new Executive Committee should have taken place before the previous committee's term expired. The PCI's decision to delay the elections violates not only the provisions of its own constitution but also those outlined in the Sports Code.

The suspension of the Paralympic Committee of India raises concerns about the impact on the organization's functioning, especially as the country gears up for international sporting events. The move comes at a crucial time when preparations for the Paralympic Games require effective leadership and direction.

While the PCI has not yet responded to the suspension, stakeholders in the Paralympic sports community are closely monitoring the developments. Athletes, coaches, and administrators are eager to see a swift resolution to the situation, ensuring that the PCI can resume its operations with a duly elected and legitimate Executive Committee.

As the situation unfolds, the sports fraternity awaits further clarification from the Paralympic Committee of India and anticipates a resolution that will enable the organization to resume its crucial role in fostering and promoting Paralympic sports in the country.
