A tweet from Daksh Gupta, co-founder of San Francisco-based AI start-up Greptile, has sparked intense online discussions. He openly stated that his company lacks work-life balance, with employees working 14-hour days. Gupta later admitted this model is unsustainable and intended only for a start-up's early years. His tweet received mixed reactions, including death threats and job applications.

Gupta's tweet, which has amassed 1.6 million views, described Greptile's demanding work environment. He mentioned that workdays typically run from 9 am to 11 pm, often extending into weekends. "I emphasize the environment is high stress, and there is no tolerance for poor work," Gupta tweeted. This statement ignited a heated debate on social media.
Some praised Gupta's honesty, while others criticised his stance on employee welfare. In a follow-up tweet on November 21, he humorously suggested he supports work-life balance for his competitors. This comment added another layer to the ongoing discussion about workplace expectations.
Work-Life Balance Debate
The conversation around work-life balance isn't new. Last year, Infosys founder Narayana Murthy suggested Indian youth should work 70-hour weeks to boost national progress. This statement also faced backlash due to concerns over the physical and mental strain of such schedules.
Gupta apologised for any offence caused, especially to software professionals outside the US. He noted that American workers often earn six-figure salaries for 20-hour weeks. He clarified that long workdays were never meant as a permanent solution but rather a phase in a start-up's journey.
Transparency and Adaptation
Gupta defended his candid approach, saying transparency is beneficial. "I'd rather candidates know this from day one than find out after joining," he stated. He acknowledged that many successful companies operate differently and expressed curiosity about whether others share his approach.
He explained that as Greptile matures, it will hire more experienced employees who can't work extreme hours due to family commitments. The company will naturally adapt like any good organisation would.
Gupta addressed criticism from Indian social media users, clarifying that his views were shaped by his environment rather than his heritage. His comments highlight the broader conversation about start-up culture pressures and balancing hustle with sustainability.
The debate continues as people weigh the merits of transparency against employee well-being in demanding industries. As start-ups navigate growth challenges, finding sustainable practices remains crucial for long-term success.
