Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha stated that the Union Territory holds significant potential for startups across various sectors. He assured that the government is dedicated to supporting young entrepreneurs. "I believe startups are powerful instruments to bridge the gap between universities and industries. Startups have also been able to meet the two important objectives- employment generation and profit generation," Sinha said at the National Seminar on the Role of Academic-Driven Startups in Developing the Economy of J&K UT RASE 2024 held at NIT Srinagar.

The Lt Governor urged students to set actionable goals to realise their entrepreneurial dreams and contribute to the nation's socio-economic transformation. "My message to future startup entrepreneurs is to focus on problem first and not product first so that your ideas can accelerate the process of Viksit Bharat and also encourage entrepreneurial spirit among young students," he said.
Potential for Startups in Various Sectors
Sinha highlighted the vast opportunities for startups in tourism, health, logistics, handloom, handicraft, horticulture, agriculture, and allied sectors. He mentioned that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's guidance, they are committed to providing necessary support and handholding to young entrepreneurs in both technology and non-technology sectors.
The Lt Governor also pointed out the administration's key initiatives like the J&K Start-up Policy and the Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP). These initiatives aim to transform the startup and entrepreneurship ecosystem, especially in rural areas of the Union Territory.
Role of Academic-Driven Startups
He emphasised the potential of academic-driven startups to revolutionise J&K's economy by fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship within educational institutions. "The national level seminar will encourage universities/colleges to invest in future and nurture talents for impactful innovations," he added.
Sinha called for enhanced collaborations between academia, industry, and policymakers to develop a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir. He stressed the importance of providing high-quality technical and vocational education and training to future entrepreneurs.
Objectives of Startups
"Two other important objectives of startups are to develop and transfer new technology for societal transformation and create a vast talent pool as per the needs of the industry," Sinha added. He believes these goals are crucial for societal progress.
The two-day national seminar is organised by National Institute of Technology Srinagar in association with the Department of Holistic Education, Central University of Kashmir, ICAR CITH, Science & Technology Department, and SKUAST-Kashmir.
Sinha concluded by encouraging students to focus on solving problems rather than just creating products. This approach will help accelerate India's development while fostering an entrepreneurial spirit among young people.
