Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal criticised the demand by some states for central funds based on their tax contributions. He described this as narrow-minded and unfortunate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes that for India to thrive, the Northeast and eastern states like Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand must advance. Goyal shared these views at the Rashtriya Ekatmata Yatra 2025 event organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the Students Experience in Inter-State Living initiative.

The minister highlighted that, over the past 11 years, the Modi government has focused intensely on developing the Northeast and eastern regions. This focus is akin to Arjuna's concentration in the Mahabharata. Goyal mentioned that some leaders from Maharashtra previously calculated tax contributions from Mumbai and Maharashtra, demanding equivalent central funds. He was referring to the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government.
Focus on Northeast Development
Goyal noted that states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana have also demanded returns on their tax contributions. He criticised this approach as short-sighted. However, he assured that the current BJP-led government in Maharashtra is attentive to Northeast India's needs. The Modi administration has prioritised the Act East and Look East policies to enhance development in these areas.
Under Modi's leadership, significant infrastructure projects are underway in the Northeast. State capitals are being linked by railways, and extensive highway networks are being constructed. Goyal pointed out that PM Modi has visited the Northeast over 65 times, encouraging people to explore its natural beauty and cultural richness.
The minister emphasised that there is no need for concern with the present government's sensitivity towards Northeast India. The ongoing efforts aim to integrate these regions more closely with the rest of India through improved connectivity and development initiatives.
The focus on developing the Northeast and eastern states reflects a broader vision for national prosperity. By addressing regional disparities, the government aims to create a more balanced growth trajectory across India.
