Stock Market Holiday On Maharashtra Election Day? Check if BSE & NSE Will Be Closed on January 15

The Maharashtra government yesterday declared a public holiday on January 15 due to civic body elections to be held across the state on the day. With this announcement came a lot of confusion, as everyone is now wondering if January 15 will also be a stock market holiday, as the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) are both headquartered in Mumbai.

Maharashtra State Election 2026

January 15 is now a public holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. The government of Maharashtra made this provision for smooth facilitation and large participation in the municipal corporation elections. The order applies to 29 municipal corporations, including the Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban districts, which fall under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The State Election Commission has scheduled polling for all 29 civic bodies in a single phase on January 15, and the results for the same will be declared on January 16.

Will BSE and NSE be closed on January 15?

Despite the public holiday declaration, there is no official confirmation yet on stock market closure. As of now, BSE and NSE have not issued any circular announcing a trading holiday on January 15, 2026.

Additionally, January 15 is not even listed as a stock market holiday in the official 2026 trading holiday calendar. On the MCX as well, January 15 is not listed as a trading holiday.

There has also been speculation on whether markets could stay shut on January 15 and make up for it by closing on February 1, which is expected to be Union Budget Day. However, as reports suggest that BSE and NSE may remain open on February 1, Budget Day just like every year's tradition.

Uncertainty is brewing among market participants who believe that equity, derivatives trading and the commodity markets may continue to function as usual, unless the exchanges issue a last-minute notification.

Similar confusion is around banking operations as well. So far, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has not issued any notification on the bank holiday on January 15.
