Stock Market Holiday: November 14th is marked as a Children's Day, also popularly known as Bal Diwas, and will be celebrated with great enthusiasm. This day also marks the birthday celebration of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru after Independence. Schools are closed on Children's Day, although there are various activities organised by schools to celebrate the day. Does that mean the Indian stock market will be closed on November 14 as well?
Stock Market Holiday:
As per the BSE and NSE list of holidays for the current month, November 14th is not considered a trading holiday by Indian stock exchanges. Hence, trading will continue to take place in equity, equity derivatives, currency, currency derivatives, derivatives, bonds, commodities, and SLB segments.
In November, the stock market has only two special holidays. One was on Laxmi Pujan aka November 1st due to the Diwali festival. The second special holiday is on November 15. Apart from this, the stock market is closed during weekends like Saturdays and Sundays by default.
Sensex, Nifty Crash On November 12:
During the trading session of November 13, Sensex led by frenzied selling, declined by as much as 1,141.88 points or 1.45%. After market hours, Sensex closed at 77,690.95 lower by 984.23 points or 1.25%.
Meanwhile, 50-scrip benchmark Nifty underperformed its counterpart, by falling as much as 373.85 points or 1.6%. After market hours, the index slipped by 324.40 points or 1.36% to close at 23,559.05. Bank Nifty shed 1,069.45 points or 2.09% to finish at 50,088.35.
As per Ajit Mishra - SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, Markets extended their corrective phase, declining by nearly one and a half per cent, continuing the existing downward trend. After a flat opening, Nifty gradually drifted lower, retesting its critical support at the 200-day exponential moving average (DEMA) for the first time in nearly five months. Pressure was felt across key sectors, with realty, metal, and auto stocks among the biggest losers. Broader indices also experienced a sharp decline, each losing over 2.5%.
Children's Day On November 14:
Children's Day is celebrated in India to raise awareness about the rights, education, and welfare of children. It is celebrated on 14 November every year on the birthday of the first prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru, who was known to have been fond of children. On this day, many educational and motivational programs for children are held all over India. Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru was born in Allabahad on November 14, 1889. He received his early education at home under private tutors. At the age of fifteen, he went to England and after two years at Harrow, joined Cambridge University where he took his tripos in Natural Sciences. He was later called to the Bar from the Inner Temple. He returned to India in 1912 and plunged straight into politics. Even as a student, he had been interested in the struggle of all nations who suffered under foreign domination. He took a keen interest in the Sinn Fein Movement in Ireland. In India, he was inevitably drawn into the struggle for independence, as per PMO data.
He was elected President of the Congress for the fourth time on July 6, 1946, and again for three more terms from 1951 to 1954.
