Stock Market Holiday Today (20-10-2026): Trading On BSE, NSE Closed For Dussehra; Dividends, Q2 Results Ahead

The Indian stock market will be closed on October 20, 2026, for the celebration of Dussehra, marking the end of the Navratri festival. The holiday means a complete shutdown in trading in equities, derivatives, bonds, and foreign currencies, among other market-related instruments, on the stock exchanges on Tuesday. However, MCX, which is also another exchange, will remain open for its evening session.

Stock Market Holiday Today

As per the BSE and NSE holidays list, trading will be shut in equities, the SLB segment, derivatives, commodities, bonds and forex, among other market-related instruments, on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, due to the celebration of Dussehra.

During a holiday, investors cannot buy or sell in any equities on BSE and NSE. Generally, stock markets are open on weekdays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm from Monday to Friday every week. The trading is usually not permitted on special occasions like festive holidays or national holidays. Dussehra is part of the festive holiday for BSE and NSE, which is observed every year.

This means you will not be able to trade in indices like Nifty 50, Sensex, BSE Bankex, Large-Cap, Midcap, Small-Cap, Nifty Bank and other sectoral indices on both the exchanges.

However, the holiday applies only to BSE and NSE. The rest of the global market is open and functioning normally.

Q2 Results Today, October 20, 2026

Despite the stock market holiday, a host of companies will declare their Q2 results for FY27 on October 20, 2026. These are --- Aptus Pharma Ltd, Pioneer Agro Extracts Ltd, Shardul Securities Ltd, and Shree Ram Twistex Ltd.

MCX Holiday Today:

The MCX is another exchange in India meant only for commodities trading. However, unlike like BSE and NSE, MCX will also observe a half-day holiday for Dussehra and will be open in the evening at 5:00 PM for trading. The evening session will continue till 11:45/11:55 PM on Tuesday.

Typically, there are two sessions carried on MCX. The first is the morning session, which is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. And from hereon, the evening session begins.

Why MCX Will Be Open In Evening Of October 20, 2026?

The evening session at MCX is for the most internationally linked non-agricultural commodities. Generally, commodities like gold, silver and crude oil are influenced by international prices and market movements. Hence, MCX permits evening trading on certain holidays when the morning session is closed. By doing so, traders are allowed to react to global price movements even when Indian stock market is shut for the holiday.

The only time MCX observes a full-day holiday is during national holidays like Gandhi Jayanti, Republic Day and Independence Day.

Eventually, the Indian stock market will resume trading on October 21, 2026.

Stock Market Outlook For Wednesday, October 21, 2026

Yesterday, Sensex closed at 73,852.90, down by 876.37 points or 1.17, while Nifty 50 plunged by 257.20 points or 1.11% to close at 22,888.95.

As per Ajit Mishra, SVP - Research, Religare Broking, global and domestic macroeconomic concerns continued to weigh on sentiment. Brent crude remained elevated around $107-108 per barrel amid geopolitical tensions and supply-side uncertainties, raising concerns over imported inflation. Investors also remained watchful of foreign fund flows and global market trends. Meanwhile, the ongoing earnings season continued to drive stock-specific action, with market participants assessing corporate profitability, margins and management commentary for further direction.

Going ahead, Mishra said, the continued underperformance of banking stocks is weighing on overall market sentiment, while other sectors are contributing to market movements on a rotational basis. From a technical perspective, the Nifty has slipped towards the immediate support zone of short term moving average i.e. 20 DEMA around 22,900, with the next key support placed in the 22,550-22,750 range. On the upside, any recovery is likely to encounter resistance around 23,200-23,300. Given elevated crude prices, mixed earnings cues and persistent geopolitical uncertainties, we recommend maintaining a cautious stance, with an emphasis on selective stock picking and prudent position sizing.
