The Maharashtra government has announced a local holiday for Mumbai and its suburban districts on December 6, 2024, to observe Mahaparinirvan Diwas, marking the death anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar. The announcement, made through a circular issued by the General Administration Department, ensures that all government and semi-government offices in these regions will remain closed on this day.
However, the declaration has led to curiosity about the operational status of the stock markets on December 6. As Mumbai houses both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), investors and traders are eager to know whether the stock exchanges will follow suit and suspend operations for the day.
Stock Market Open or Closed on December 6?
As of now, there has been no official notification from the BSE or NSE indicating a holiday on Mahaparinirvan Diwas. According to the latest stock market holiday calendar, both exchanges are scheduled to remain operational on December 6.

Traditionally, stock exchanges have occasionally declared holidays on local holidays observed in Mumbai. Nevertheless, until an official intimation is made, regular trading activities will proceed as usual on Mahaparinirvan Diwas.
Stock Market Holidays in December 2024
The BSE and NSE holiday calendar reveals that the final stock market holiday of the year will fall on December 25, Christmas Day. On this date, trading across all segments will be suspended.

Mahaparinirvan Diwas
Observed annually on December 6, Mahaparinirvan Diwas commemorates the passing of Dr BR Ambedkar in 1956. Known as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, Dr Ambedkar's legacy as a social reformer and advocate for social justice is deeply revered across India.
