Stock Market Holidays 2024: India is all set to ignite with the joy of lights as the Diwali festival kicks off on October 29. Diwali is one of the longest festivals in India, and this year, it will continue until November 3, 2024. Schools, public, and bank holidays are observed during these days. Does that mean the stock market will also be closed on these days? In total, trading on BSE and NSE will be closed for three days during the Diwali festival. Check dates here!
October 29, 2024:
Diwali is a five-day celebration in India; however, before that, the country celebrates Dhanteras, which will be held on October 31.
Dhanteras is celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day (Trayodashi) of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin (according to the amānta tradition) or Kartika (according to the purnimanta tradition). Dhanvantari, also worshipped on the occasion of Dhanteras, is considered the god of Ayurveda who imparted the wisdom of Ayurveda for the betterment of mankind and to help rid it of the suffering of disease, as per Wikipedia.
Is the market closed on this day? No! As per BSE and NSE listed, the market is open for trading on Tuesday, October 31, despite it being a public and school holiday.
It needs to be noted that stock market holidays differ from public and bank holidays.
October 30, 2024:
This day will be celebrated as Choti Diwali or Naraka Chaturdashi, which is an annual Hindu festival that falls on Chaturdashi of the Krishna Paksha in the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin or Kartika.
The stock market is open on this day as well.
October 31, 2024:
Notably, the Chaturdashi Tithi which will begin at 1:15 pm on October 30, will end on October 3:52 pm on October 31. While October 31 will also see the commencement of Abhyang Snan Muhurat which will begin from 5:20 AM to 6:32 AM on Wednesday.
The stock market is open on this day as well.
November 1, 2024:
On this day, Amavasya Tithi which began from 3:52 PM on October 31, will end at 6:16 PM on November 1. On this day, the auspicious occasion of Lakshmi Puja Muhurat will begin from 5:36 PM to 6:16 PM.
On November 1, BSE and NSE officially declared it a stock market holiday. However, stock exchanges will open in the late evening of November 1, as Muhurat Trading due to the occasion of Laxmi Pujan will be carried.
November 2, 2024:
On this day, Indians will celebrate the auspicious occasion of Govardhan Puja. The stock market will be closed on November 2, because it is a Saturday which is a default holiday.
November 3, 2024:
The last day of the Diwali festival will be celebrated as Bhai Dooj. The market will be closed on November 3, as it is Sunday.
