Closing Bell: Sensex Settles at 76,249, Nifty Below 23,100; Auto Stocks Drag Markets Lower

Stock market closed slightly lower after a volatile session on Wednesday. The Sensex declined 122.52 points (0.16%), settling at 76,171.08, while the Nifty 50 slipped 26.55 points (0.12%) to 23,045.25.
Most sectoral indices ended in the red, except for Nifty Financial Services, Nifty PSU Banks, and Nifty Metal, which posted gains of 0.45%, 0.84%, and 0.67%, respectively.

Indian stock market recovered early losses during the second half of the trading session. Sensex recovered to almost touching green, however, currently floats around 76,200 levels. While Nifty 50 is holding around 23,060 mark. Both benchmarks are now mildly down.

Nifty Midcap 100, Nifty Smallcap and Bank Nifty also recovered losses, and are marginally down. India's volatility index, however, is up by 2.50%.

The recovery comes after the Finance Ministry released the draft of new income tax bill. Also, investors are expecting key reliefs in tariffs and strengthening in India-US bilateral relations from PM Modi's visit to Trump from February 12-13. Investors will also focus on upcoming US CPI data and Fed chair Jerome Powell's speech.

U.S. stock markets ended mixed on Tuesday, with the Nasdaq Composite slipping while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 posted modest gains.
