Stock Market Outlook Today, August 19, 2026: Sensex, Nifty Likely To Remain Under Pressure Amid High Crude

Indian equity markets are likely to remain under pressure on Wednesday, August 19, as elevated crude oil prices, geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran and weak global cues continue to weigh on investor sentiment. Brent crude trading above the $90 per barrel mark and uncertainty surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz are expected to remain key factors for domestic markets.

The pressure on crude prices could also have implications for the Indian rupee, inflation and foreign investor flows, making developments in the oil market particularly important for investors in the near term.

Sensex Nifty Prediction Today

"Indian equities are likely to remain under pressure in the near term as elevated crude oil prices, US-Iran tensions and weak global cues weigh on sentiment. With Brent crude rising above US$90/bbl and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz remaining unresolved, oil prices will remain a key monitorable for the rupee, inflation and foreign flows," said Siddhartha Khemka - Head of Research, Wealth Management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd.

Nifty Prediction for Wednesday, August 19

The Nifty 50 ended Tuesday's session below the important 24,200 level, reflecting continued weakness in the benchmark index. The index fell 0.55% to close at 24,154 after trading in a volatile and choppy session amid the weekly expiry.

According to Bajaj Broking Research, the Nifty formed a bearish candlestick pattern while continuing to make lower highs and lower lows. The index also closed below its 50-day exponential moving average (EMA), indicating continued corrective pressure.

The brokerage noted that the Nifty has formed lower highs and lower lows over the past eight sessions. A shift towards higher highs and higher lows on the daily chart would be required to signal a possible pause in the ongoing corrective trend.

"Overall index is expected to extend the recent consolidation and trade in the broad range of 24,000-24,600 in the coming sessions," said Bajaj Broking Research.

The Nifty has remained in a consolidation phase for the past 11 sessions with a corrective bias. The index has retraced around 50% of its previous seven-session rise from 23,606 to 24,774, with the relatively shallow retracement suggesting the possibility of a higher base formation.

For Wednesday's session, the 24,000-23,800 zone is expected to act as an important support area. This region combines trendline support from the lows of the past four months, a previous major gap area and the 61.8% retracement level of the move from 23,606 to 24,774.

Bank Nifty Prediction for Wednesday

Bank Nifty formed an inverted hammer-like candle on Tuesday and remained within the previous session's trading range. According to Bajaj Broking Research, the pattern indicates consolidation with a corrective bias around the 50-day EMA.

The broader eight-week consolidation range remains between 56,500 and 58,700. The brokerage expects this range to remain intact unless the index gives a decisive breakout or breakdown. On the upside, 58,000 is an important resistance level. A sustained move above this level could open the way towards 58,500-58,700.

In the short term, Bank Nifty has been moving within a narrow range for the past 11 sessions. The index has retraced only around 50% of its previous seven-session rise from 56,023 to 58,248, which the brokerage sees as a sign of a possible higher base.

"On the downside, a decisive break below 57,000 (50 days EMA & rising trendline support) would signal extended corrective move towards the 56,500-56,200, being the confluence of 200 days EMA and the lower band of the broader consolidation range." said the brokerage.
