Nifty Prediction Today for August 20: Check Key Levels to Watch
The Nifty has continued to show a corrective trend, forming lower highs and lower lows in recent sessions. Technical indicators suggest that the index remains under pressure, although the possibility of a short-term rebound cannot be ruled out as the daily stochastic indicator has moved close to oversold territory.
The index has been consolidating within a broad range for nearly 12 sessions while retracing around 61.8% of its earlier sharp rise from 23,606 to 24,774. The relatively shallow retracement indicates the possibility of a higher base formation, which could support a pullback if buying interest returns.
For Thursday's session, the 24,000-23,800 zone will remain an important support area for the Nifty. According to Bajaj Broking Research, this zone is supported by a combination of trendline support, a previous major gap area and the 61.8% retracement level of the earlier move from 23,606 to 24,774.
"Nifty has short-term support placed at 24,000-23,800 levels being the confluence of the trendline support joining last 4 months lows, previous major gap area and 61.8% retracement of previous up move 23,606 to 24,774," said Bajaj Broking Research.
The broader technical setup suggests that Nifty could continue to consolidate between 24,000 and 24,600 in the coming sessions. A sustained move above the upper end of this range would be required to indicate a meaningful improvement in momentum, while a break below the support zone could increase selling pressure.
Bank Nifty Prediction for Thursday
The Bank Nifty also remained in a corrective phase and formed a high-wave candle with a lower high and lower low around its 50-day exponential moving average. The index continues to trade within its broader eight-week consolidation range of 56,500-58,700.
For Thursday, the 57,500-57,800 zone is likely to act as an important resistance area. A sustained move above this range could strengthen the recovery and open the way towards 58,200 and eventually 58,700.
"Within the consolidation index is facing resistance around 57,500-57,800 levels. Index sustaining below the same will open down side towards 56,500-56,200, being the confluence of 200 days EMA and the lower band of the broader consolidation range." said Bajaj Broking Research.
The index has also been consolidating in a relatively narrow range over the past 12 sessions after retracing around 50% of its previous seven-session rise from 56,023 to 58,248. The shallow correction indicates that a higher base may be developing.
Global Cues, Crude Oil Prices to Guide Indian Markets
Global developments remain a major concern for domestic equities. Crude oil prices were trading around $91.2 per barrel, keeping concerns about inflation and corporate profitability elevated. Higher oil prices can put additional pressure on India's import bill and may weigh on sectors and companies sensitive to input costs.
Asian markets also remained under pressure, with South Korea's Kospi declining more than 5%. Geopolitical concerns have intensified after a 60-day deadline passed without a resolution, while both sides continued to maintain an aggressive position.
Higher long-term bond yields in the US, Germany and Japan are another factor weighing on emerging-market equities. Rising yields can make developed-market bonds relatively more attractive for global investors and potentially reduce the flow of funds towards riskier emerging markets such as India.
