Stock Market Outlook Today, September 16: Sensex, Nifty May Fall Further; Fed Decision in Focus
Indian stock markets are likely to remain under pressure on Wednesday, September 16, after benchmark indices suffered a sharp sell-off in the previous session. Rising crude oil prices, a weaker rupee, higher bond yields and renewed inflation concerns are expected to keep investors cautious, while attention will remain on the upcoming US Federal Reserve policy decision.
Stock Market Outlook Today, 16 September 2026: Sensex, Nifty Prediction for Wednesday
The domestic market saw a highly volatile session on Tuesday, September 15. The Nifty initially opened higher and climbed to an intraday high of 23,592, but the gains quickly faded as selling intensified at higher levels. The index eventually fell more than 550 points from the day's high and ended below the 23,150 mark.

The Sensex declined 777.94 points, or 1.04%, to close at 74,003.82, while the Nifty dropped 279.50 points, or 1.19%, to finish at 23,118.60. Market volatility also increased sharply, with the India VIX rising nearly 9% to close at 13.4.
The sell-off came as crude oil prices remained above $105 a barrel, increasing concerns over India's import bill and inflation. A weaker rupee and higher bond yields added to the pressure on equities, while investors also remained cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy decision.
"Indian equities are likely to remain weak amid elevated crude prices, renewed inflation concerns and uncertainty ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy decision. Brent crude rose 2.3% to around USD 108/bbl amid unresolved geopolitical tensions and supply concerns, adding to inflationary pressures," said Siddhartha Khemka - Head of Research, Wealth Management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd
Nifty Prediction For September 16: 23,000 And 22,800 Seen As Key Support Levels
The Nifty's technical setup has weakened after Tuesday's sharp decline. The index formed a sizable bearish candle on the daily chart after opening higher but failing to sustain gains. It also breached last week's low of 23,231, indicating that the downward trend remains intact.
"Going ahead, bias remain down below 23,600 levels being the Monday's high and last week breakdown area. A follow through weakness will open downside towards 23,000 and 22,800 levels in the coming sessions. Only a formation of higher high and higher low on a sustained basis in the daily chart and a move above 23,600 will signal a pause in the current down trend," said Bajaj Broking Research.
This makes 23,600 an important level for the Nifty on Wednesday. A sustained move above this zone could provide some relief to the market, while failure to reclaim the level could keep the index vulnerable to further selling. On the downside, 23,000 and 22,800 are likely to remain important levels to watch.
Bank Nifty Outlook: 56,000 Holds Key, 55,700 Break Could Trigger Further Fall
Bank Nifty also ended Tuesday's session on a weak note after failing to sustain above the 57,000 mark. The index formed a large bearish candle and closed around the 56,000 level, keeping the near-term trend under pressure.
"Index is currently placed around the lower band of the last 11-week range 56,000-58,700. A breach and close below last week low of 55,700 levels will signal extension of the corrective decline towards 55,200 and 54,800 levels in the coming sessions," said Bajaj Broking Research.
For Wednesday's session, 57,000 is likely to act as an important hurdle for Bank Nifty. A sustained move above this level could signal some pause in the ongoing decline. However, a break and close below 55,700 could extend the corrective move towards 55,200 and 54,800.
