Why Are Sugar Stocks Rising?

The recent rally in sugar stocks has come as many companies in the segment saw strong buying interest after sugar prices gained significantly over the past few days.

Spot sugar prices in major markets across India surged to their 16-year high of Rs 5,530 per quintal on August 19, 2026, as per NCDEX data. To curb the rising sugar prices, central government has allowed 1 million tonnes of raw sugar imports and has even tightened stockholding limits for sugar dealers. However, domestic sugar price jump has emerged of the key factors fuelling sugar stocks.

"The recent rally is primarily being driven by a combination of tighter supply expectations, rising sugar realisations, firm global prices and expectations of better profitability for sugar mills. Domestic sugar prices have climbed around 10% over the past month and reached record levels, while global raw sugar prices have also strengthened significantly. This has improved market expectations for the earnings of sugar producers, particularly those with efficient operations and strong recovery rates," explained Pravesh Gour , Sr. Technical Analyst at Swastika Investmart.

Sugar Stocks Are on Fire! Should You Buy?

While the recent jump in domestic sugar prices may help in improving realisations for sugar producers and lower inventories would provide a supportive backdrop for earnings, investors should not treat the recent rally as a straight-line opportunity, cautions Pravesh Gour.

" The next few weeks will therefore be crucial, with monsoon progress, cane availability, sugar production estimates, domestic prices, ethanol policy and government intervention likely to determine the next leg of the sector's performance. We believe companies with strong balance sheets, efficient sugar operations and a diversified ethanol/distillery portfolio are better positioned to benefit from the improving cycle," added Gour.
