Suppliers Charging Up To 20 Times Higher Price For Rs. 1500-Rs. 2000 Oxygen Cylinder

At a time when there is this looming Covid 19 crisis which has resulted in acute oxygen shortage, people all over the country in order to save life when every minute counts are reported to be charged eight to ten times more for Oxygen cylinders. In fact on Google, searches related to Covid 19 have taken a front seat and everything that once was of most interest is down in ranking.

Suppliers Charge Up To 20 Times Higher Price For Rs.1500- 2000 Oxygen Cylinder

Actual and selling cost for oxygen cylinder currently in the country

It is being suggested that Oxygen that is normally available for Rs. 1500-2000 per cylinder is now being sold at an exorbitant price of Rs. 30000- Rs. 350000 per cylinder. This is despite the Supreme Court's continuous monitoring and curbs against the situation.

The reasons for such huge price differential in the actual and selling cost of this emergency life-giving or medical oxygen are the hoarding and black marketing practices.

State governments requesting ramping up of Oxygen production

To fill the gap in medical supplies, the aid that is coming in from foreign or is sourced from our own country is being rendered to the states as per the quota set for them by the Centre. And the current availability of Oxygen is not able to make up for that prescribed quota as well as is visible in some of the states including Delhi. Even if there was an uptick in supply at one point, the demand far exceeded that.

Centre however claims that there is no shortage of Oxygen and judicial use should be done

Other than the foreign aid as per a TV report, India has deployed the technology used in Tejas fighter planes to produce oxygen directly from air and the same is being made use of to replenish country's alarmingly low medical gas. The technology is referred as Onboard oxygen generation and the funds for it are sourced from PM Cares Fund.
