Swiggy Rolls Out Paw-ternity Policy to Support Employees' Pet Care Needs

Swiggy, the renowned online food delivery platform, has taken a significant step towards acknowledging the importance of pet companionship in its employees' lives. The company announced the introduction of a Paw-ternity policy on Thursday, aimed at supporting its staff in pet care and adoption. This initiative marks a notable expansion in the company's approach to employee welfare, extending its support beyond traditional human-centric parental policies.

Swiggys New Paw-ternity Policy

Girish Menon, Chief Human Resource Officer at Swiggy, highlighted the company's progressive stance on parental policies. "Building on our gender-neutral parental policy introduced in 2020, which provides substantial paid leave for primary and secondary caregivers, in addition to bonding leaves, and time off for adoption, surrogacy, miscarriage, and IVF, we are now expanding our definition of parenthood to include pet parents as well," Menon stated. This move underscores Swiggy's commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace culture that recognizes the diverse needs of its employees.

The Paw-ternity policy offers several benefits designed to ease the integration of new pet companions into employees' families. As part of this policy, full-time employees will be granted an additional paid day off, supplementing their annual leave entitlement. This provision is specifically tailored to welcome new pets into their homes. The announcement coincides with National Pet Day on April 11, underscoring the company's timing and commitment to pet welfare.

Furthermore, Swiggy encourages a flexible work arrangement for pet parents during their pets' initial settling-in period. Employees may opt for work-from-home options to provide necessary comfort and support to their new furry family members. "Pet parents can now use their casual or sick leave without hesitation to attend to the needs of their pets," Menon explained, addressing the policy's allowance for routine vaccinations or veterinary appointments.

Supporting Employees Through Bereavement

In addition to the aforementioned benefits, Swiggy's Paw-ternity policy extends its support to employees during more challenging times. Recognizing the deep emotional bonds between pet parents and their pets, the company offers bereavement leave. This provision ensures that employees have the time they need to grieve and recover from the loss of a pet, acknowledging the significant impact such a loss can have on an individual's well-being.

This comprehensive approach to employee welfare by Swiggy sets a new standard in corporate responsibility towards pet ownership and care. By integrating these policies, Swiggy not only enhances its workplace environment but also promotes a broader understanding of family that includes non-human members. Such initiatives reflect a growing recognition of pets' roles in providing companionship and emotional support, further solidifying Swiggy's reputation as an employer that values the holistic well-being of its workforce.
