TN Election 2026 Polling Time & Key Details
Polling for the Tamil Nadu elections 2026 will begin at 7:00 AM and continue till 6:00 PM. Importantly, any voter standing in the queue before 6 PM will be allowed to vote which ensures everyone gets a chance to participate in the democratic process.
With over 5.67 crore eligible voters, including male, female, and third-gender voters, this election is expected to see high turnout.
What's Closed on April 23? Public Holiday in Tamil Nadu
The Tamil Nadu government has declared April 23, 2026 as a public holiday for polling day to get maximum voter participation.
Government Offices & Companies: All government offices, PSUs, private companies, IT firms, factories, and commercial establishments are required to grant leave to employees so they can cast their vote.
Schools & Colleges: All schools, colleges, and educational institutions across Tamil Nadu will remain closed on election day.
TASMAC Liquor Shops Closed : Dry Day In Tamil Nadu
All TASMAC shops and bars will remain closed from April 21 to April 23, and again on May 4 which is counting day. Strict action will be taken against illegal sale or stocking of liquor.
What's Open on Tamil Nadu Election Day?
Despite the public holiday, several essential and daily-use services will continue to operate.
Banks are generally open on election day, as it is not an official RBI holiday. However, some branches may function with reduced staff, especially near polling booths.
Hospitals, pharmacies, police services, and emergency services will remain fully operational. Election duty personnel are eligible for postal ballots.
Buses, metro, and local transport services will run normally to help voters reach polling booths conveniently.
Most petrol stations and grocery shops remain open, though timings may vary locally.
How to Vote Without Voter ID
If you don't have your Voter ID card (EPIC), you can still vote using any of the 12 approved ID proofs, including, Aadhaar card, PAN card, Passport & Driving licence. It is important to make sure your name is on the voter list before heading to the polling booth.
