Tamil Nadu Government Issues Advisory to Youth on Overseas Employment Scams

In a significant move to safeguard its citizens, the Tamil Nadu government has issued a crucial advisory for individuals seeking employment opportunities abroad, especially in South East Asian countries. This guidance comes in response to the recent rescue of 83 Tamil youths who found themselves in dire straits in Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar. These individuals were taken abroad under the guise of lucrative IT sector jobs but were instead coerced into participating in illegal online activities.

Advisory on Overseas Job Scams

The Non-Resident Tamils Welfare department highlighted the plight of Indian nationals lured by unregistered agents promising high-paying jobs in Laos. These job seekers were illegally transported across the Thai border into Laos, where they faced captivity under severe conditions. Many were subjected to physical and mental abuse by criminal syndicates forcing them to engage in unlawful activities. The government's statement underscored the misuse of tourist visas, which do not permit employment in Thailand or Laos, emphasizing that such visas should solely be used for tourism purposes.

With instances of human trafficking culminating in sentences of up to 18 years in prison in Laos, the Tamil Nadu government's advisory serves as a stern warning against falling prey to deceptive job offers. It urges potential job seekers to conduct thorough background checks on recruitment agents and their prospective employers before proceeding with any overseas employment plans. The advisory strongly recommends traveling only with a valid employment visa and an authentic employment contract, verified through the Indian Embassy and the embassies of the destination countries within India.

This proactive stance by the Tamil Nadu government aims to prevent its citizens from becoming entangled in employment scams that could jeopardize their freedom and well-being. By advocating for vigilance and due diligence, the government hopes to shield its workforce from exploitation and ensure their safety in foreign lands.
