Tamil Nadu, India's largest exporter of electronic goods in the fiscal year 2023, has solidified its position as the torchbearer of the country's electronics export industry in FY24. Accounting for a staggering 30% of all electronic goods exports from India in the aforementioned period, Tamil Nadu's ascendancy marks a departure from its historical status as a late bloomer in this sector.

Traditionally, the mantle of electronic goods exports rested with Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka until FY22. However, recent years have witnessed a dramatic reversal, with Tamil Nadu emerging as the solitary standout among its peers. While other states grappled with dwindling figures or stagnant growth rates, Tamil Nadu's export numbers surged consistently, propelling the state to the forefront of India's burgeoning electronics export landscape.
The surge in Tamil Nadu's contribution has catalysed a seismic shift in India's overall export portfolio, with the share of the electronic goods sector more than doubling in recent years. At the epicentre of this exponential growth lies the meteoric rise in smartphone exports, which presently constitute nearly 40% of India's electronics exports.
Remarkably, a significant portion of these smartphones trace their origins to just one district: Kancheepuram, nestled in the north-eastern expanse of Tamil Nadu. Over the past two fiscal years, close to 40% of smartphones manufactured in India embarked on their global journey from the precincts of Kancheepuram. The lion's share of these electronic marvels found their way to the United States, closely followed by the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands.
Tamil Nadu nearly quadrupled its FY22 export volume of electronic goods, pushing its exports to over $7.4 billion between April 2023 and January 2024 alone. Such exponential growth underscores Tamil Nadu's metamorphosis into a global powerhouse in the realm of electronics manufacturing and export.
A glance at state-wise data reaffirms Tamil Nadu's unrivalled dominance, with its FY24 exports eclipsing the combined figures of Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka, the erstwhile stalwarts in this domain. Gujarat and Maharashtra, the other constituents of the top five exporters, have grappled with stagnation, further accentuating Tamil Nadu's ascendancy.
In the broader context of India's export landscape, engineering goods continue to reign supreme, followed closely by petroleum products, gems, and jewellery. However, the meteoric rise of electronic goods, which barely registered a blip on the export radar in FY18, underscores the pivotal role played by Tamil Nadu in reshaping India's export narrative.
Unsurprisingly, the United States emerges as the undisputed behemoth in India's electronic goods export trajectory. In FY24, the U.S. accounted for a staggering 35% of India's electronic goods exports, valued at $8.7 billion. Trailing behind, the UAE commanded a 12% share, with the Netherlands and the U.K. each claiming a 5% stake.
The ascendancy of the U.S. as the primary destination for India's electronics exports has been nothing short of meteoric. Surging from a modest 15-20% share between FY18 and FY22, the U.S.'s dominance burgeoned to 24-34% in the latest two fiscal years. This surge is emblematic of the symbiotic relationship between India's burgeoning electronics industry and the insatiable appetite of the American market.
In essence, the data paint a compelling narrative: the meteoric rise of Tamil Nadu's electronics exports, fueled by the technological prowess emanating from the bylanes of Kancheepuram, has emerged as the linchpin of India's export resurgence. In an increasingly interconnected global economy, Tamil Nadu's trajectory serves as a testament to the transformative power of innovation and relentless pursuit of excellence.
As India seeks to cement its status as a global manufacturing hub, the rise of Tamil Nadu as a powerhouse in electronics exports stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Armed with ingenuity, resilience, and a commitment to excellence, Tamil Nadu is poised to script the next chapter in India's economic resurgence on the global stage.
