IMD has also issued yellow and orange alerts in some cities. The weather conditions are expected to be filled with heavy downpour for at least till October 27, 2026. Tamil Nadu Weather Update: IMD Issues Yellow, Orange Alert
IMD has assigned Orange alerts in regions of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts & Karaikal area.
Meanwhile, yellow alert is given on Tiruchirappalli, Erode, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Namakkal, Villuppuram, Tiruppur and Karur districts & Puducherry on October 22.
IMD said that heavy to to very heavy rain at isolated places with thunderstorm & lightning with gusty wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph at one or two places is likely to occur over Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts & Karaikal area.
Also, heavy rain is likely at isolated places with thunderstorm & lightning with gusty wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph at one or two places is likely to occur over Tiruchirappalli, Erode, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Namakkal, Villuppuram, Tiruppur and Karur districts & Puducherry.
Meanwhile, moderate rain at many places with thunderstorm & lightning with gusty wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph at one or two places is likely to occur over the rest of Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Are Schools Closed Today?
Chennai School Holiday Today
As of now, there has been no official statement regarding closure of schools in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu for October 22 despite experiencing heavy rainfall yesterday.
On Wednesday, in Chennai, MGR Nagar recorded 15 cm of rainfall, while the Mamallapuram region witnessed 9 cm of rains. Also, in Tenkasi and Sattankulam, 6 cm of rain each was recorded.
School Holiday Today In Tamil Nadu:
Five districts have declared school holidays on October 22. These include, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi and Tirupattur.
Also, it is advisable for parents to verify with the local school authorities on school holiday before sending your child to school. This will avoid a lot of distress as the rains intensity indicates for flood-like situation.

IMD believes heavy to very heavy rain will continue at isolated places with thunderstorm & lightning with gusty wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph at one or two places is likely to occur over Kanyakumari, Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts.
Also, heavy rain at isolated places with thunderstorm & lightning with gusty wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph at one or two places is likely to occur over Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Theni, Tenkasi, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Villuppuram, Tiruppur and Perambalur districts, Puducherry & Karaikal area.
The rest of the region will see moderate rains with 40-50 kmph gusty winds.
Orange Alerts: Kanyakumari, Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts.
Heavy rains with gusty winds at the speed of 40-50 kmph will occur in Kanyakumari, Coimbatore, Nilgiris districts and Ghat areas of Tirunelveli districts. The weather will be same for Tiruppur, Erode, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruvannamalai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Cuddalore, Villuppuram, Kallakurichi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Sivaganga districts, Puducherry & Karaikal area.
Orange Alerts: Kanyakumari, Coimbatore, Nilgiris districts and Ghat areas of Tirunelveli districts.
Once again, heavy to very heavy rains with thunderstorm & lightning with gusty wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph at one or two places is likely to occur over Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Theni districts. Similar weather conditions is expected in Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruvannamalai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Madurai, Dindigul, Cuddalore, Villuppuram, Kallakurichi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Sivaganga, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Chennai districts, Puducherry & Karaikal area.
Orange Alerts: Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Theni districts.
Heavy rain at isolated places with thunderstorm & lightning with gusty wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph at one or two places is likely to occur over Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Namakkal, Tiruppur, Karur, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore and Villuppuram districts, Puducherry and Karaikal.
The severity of heavy rains will calm on October 27 as IMD expects moderate rain to occur at isolated places over Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Thenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari districts & and Karaikal area.
Light rain is likely to occur at isolated places over rest Tamil Nadu & Puducherry.
