Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Govt And Private Schools To Remain Closed In These Districts Due To Incessant Rain

Government and private schools in a few districts of Tamil Nadu including Thirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Viruthunagar, Theni, Pudhukottai, and Nilgiri will remain closed on Thursday due to incessant rainfall in the region. According to the news agency PTI, the decision to close all schools has been taken by District collectors of eight districts. In view of the widespread rain concerning districts Collectors of these districts have declared a holiday for schools in these districts.

In its all India weather summary and forecast bulletin on November 22, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that a trough in easterly runs from over Comorin area to Westcentral Bay of Bengal off Andhra Pradesh coast in lower tropospheric levels is very likely to cause light to moderate rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu on 22nd & 23rd; over Kerala & Mahe during 22nd-24th; over Coastal Karnataka on 23rd and over South Interior Karnataka on 23rd & 24th November, 2023. The trough in easterly at mean sea level over the Comorin area to Westcentral Bay of Bengal off the Andhra Pradesh coast extending up to 3.1 km above mean sea level persists.
Meanwhile, the IMD said that cyclonic circulations over Tamil Nadu can cause moderate to medium rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in Kerala during the next five days.

Rain

The IMD said on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday that Dharapur recorded 17cm of rainfall, followed by Avinashi 14cm, Andipatti 14cm, Parangiprttai 13cm and Watrap 12cm.

The Chennai Regional Meteorological Center's Thursday forecast indicates possibilities of light to moderate rainfall throughout Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal regions, coupled with thunderstorms and lightning at certain places. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari districts of Tamil Nadu, and in the Karaikal area.

The met department has forecast heavy rains in parts of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, and thunderstorms till November 23.
