Tata ASML partnership to support 300 mm semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat

Tata Electronics and Dutch semiconductor equipment firm ASML have signed a partnership to support Tata’s upcoming 300 mm semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat. Announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Netherlands, the deal covers advanced lithography tools, ramp-up support, and faster training of local talent for India’s wafer fabrication plans.

Tata Electronics and Dutch semiconductor equipment firm ASML agreed to work together on chip manufacturing in India, a joint statement said on Saturday. The announcement came during Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to the Netherlands. The two sides said the partnership will support Tata Electronics as it builds a semiconductor facility in Dholera, Gujarat.

Tata ASML back Dholera chip fab

The planned Dholera site is a 300 mm, or 12 inch, semiconductor fab. Tata Electronics is setting up Indias first semiconductor wafer fabrication plant. The project involves an investment of Rs 91,000 crore. The companies said the arrangement fits wider India-Netherlands cooperation on critical technologies, including semiconductor technology.

Tata Electronics ASML partnership for Dholera Fab

Under the pact, ASML will support the establishment and ramp-up of Tata Electronics upcoming fab in Dholera. ASML is known for a monopoly in one category of lithography equipment. That equipment is vital for producing advanced small size semiconductors. The statement said this equipment and related support should help stable operations at the new plant.

"The collaboration between Tata Electronics and ASML will focus on deploying ASMLs holistic suite of advanced lithography tools and solutions for the Dholera Fab. The use of ASMLs industry-leading technologies is expected to ensure seamless operations at Indiaâs first commercial 300 mm semiconductor Fab,\" the statement said.

Tata Electronics ASML focus on skills and supply chain

The partnership also targets faster training for local talent and lithography-led skill building. The two companies said they will work on supply chain resilience. They also plan to set up research and development infrastructure. The statement linked this work to lithography being central to chip production and long-term fab performance.

\"ASMLs deep expertise in holistic lithography solutions will ensure the timely ramp of our Fab in Dholera, create a resilient and trusted supply chain for our global customers, drive innovation, and develop talent locally,\" Tata Electronics, CEO and MD, Randhir Thakur, said.

Tata Electronics ASML views on India semiconductor sector

ASML, President and CEO, Christophe Fouquet, said the industry outlook in India is drawing interest. \"Indias rapidly expanding semiconductor sector represents many compelling opportunities, and we are committed to establishing long-term partnerships in the region. Signing this Memorandum of Understanding today marks an important milestone, and we look forward to close collaboration with Tata Electronics and its broader ecosystem. We believe Tata Electronics is strongly positioned to realize its ambitions in expanding semiconductor capabilities,\" Fouquet said.

Tata Electronics said the Dholera unit aims to make chips for automotive and mobile devices. It also plans to supply sectors such as artificial intelligence AI and other areas. Tata Electronics has also tied up with PSMC Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, Taiwan. The company said the link helps access technologies including 28nm, 40nm, 55nm, 90nm, and 110nm.
