Tata Group Nears Deal To Enter iPhone Manufacturing, Set To Acquire Wistron Plant

The Tata Group, one of India's most renowned business conglomerates, is nearing an agreement to purchase an Apple Inc. supplier's plant as early as August, marking the first time a local company would enter the manufacturing of iPhones, Bloomberg reported.

Sources familiar with the matter have revealed that Tata Group is in advanced talks to acquire the Wistron Corp. factory in southern Karnataka state. This deal, which is estimated to be valued at over $600 million, would mark the culmination of nearly a year of negotiations. The Wistron facility, known for its cutting-edge manufacturing capabilities, currently employs over 10,000 workers who are involved in the assembly of the latest iPhone 14 model.

In order to receive financial incentives from the government, Wistron reportedly agreed to supply iPhones from the facility valued at least $1.8 billion in the fiscal year ending in March 2024. The number of employees at the plant would also be tripled by the following year. In light of Wistron's decision to stop selling iPhones in India, Tata is prepared to uphold its pledges.

Apple's plans to expand its product base beyond China and develop technology manufacturing in the South Asian country are anticipated to gain steam with the introduction of an Indian iPhone. In the three months that ended on June 30, Wistron exported about $500 million worth of iPhones from India, and other significant Taiwanese suppliers of Apple, Foxconn Technology Group and Pegatron Corp., have also increased production locally.

India has improved its domestic manufacturing since Prime Minister Narendra Modi established government initiatives with generous financial rewards to boost output and employment. In response to the Covid lockdowns in that country and the escalating hostilities between Washington and Beijing, Apple has intensified efforts to diversify away from that market.

Modi's aspirations to compete with China as the world's factory may receive a big boost from an Indian company that produces iPhones. It might encourage other major electronics manufacturers to think about producing in India in order to lessen their dependence on China.

The 155-year-old Tata Group offers everything from tech services to salt for sale. The business has been trying to break into the relatively new e-commerce and electronics manufacturing industries for the Tata family over the past few years.

It already manufactures iPhone chassis, or the metal framework of the gadget, at its factory in Tamil Nadu state, which is spread out across hundreds of acres of land. According to Chairman N Chandrasekaran, the Tatas also support the desire to manufacture chips.
