Tata Play Removes Sony Channels Citing Lower Viewership, SPNI Objects

Tata Play, formerly known as Tata Sky, has begun removing Sony Pictures Network India (SPNI) channels from its curated packs due to low viewership. This move has sparked opposition from SPNI, which claims the decision is arbitrary. From Thursday, Tata Play will de-package SPN channels and adjust monthly charges accordingly.

SPNI expressed surprise at Tata Play's decision, calling it misleading and arbitrary. The broadcaster stated, "This arbitrary decision seems to have been made without any notice to SPNI or apparent consideration for their subscribers' preferences." SPNI believes the move is a retaliation for exercising their audit rights on Tata Play's subscriber management system.

SPNI further commented on the discrepancies they observed in Tata Play's subscriber management system over the past few years. They remain confident that loyal viewers will continue to access their channels through other platforms nationwide. "Our commitment to delivering top-notch entertainment remains steadfast," SPNI added.

Tata Play's Justification and Subscriber Impact

Harit Nagpal, MD and CEO of Tata Play, explained that the platform is streamlining channel packs by removing less-watched channels and adjusting monthly charges. He mentioned that subscribers could easily reinstate any removed channels by giving a missed call. Nagpal anticipates that 75% of customers with modified packs will benefit from reduced charges.

Tata Play aims to optimise its offerings by focusing on channels with higher viewership. This strategy is expected to enhance customer satisfaction by lowering costs for most subscribers while maintaining access to popular content.
