Tata Power Starts Solar Cell Production at Tirunelveli to Strengthen Domestic Supply

Tata Power has started producing solar cells at India's largest single-location facility in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. This move aims to boost domestic manufacturing of solar cells and modules essential for converting sunlight into electricity. TP Solar Ltd, a subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL), announced the commercial production from its 2GW solar cell line at this facility.

Tata Powers New Solar Cell Unit

The Tirunelveli plant, which began producing solar modules earlier this year, now enhances Tata Power's capacity to meet the increasing demand for high-quality, domestically produced solar components. The plant is expected to ramp up production with an additional 2 GW capacity over the next 4-6 weeks, reaching a peak production of 4GW within a few months.

Boosting Domestic Solar Manufacturing

The module production line at the Tirunelveli plant was commissioned in October 2023 and has already produced 1,250 MW of solar modules. Tata Power has invested nearly Rs 4,300 crore in establishing this facility. The total cell and module manufacturing capacity at the plant is 4.3 GW.

"The commencement of cell production at our Tirunelveli plant is a significant step towards indigenisation in the solar value chain and achieving self-sufficiency... We believe that this plant will lead the way in supporting the country's vision for a Net-Zero carbon future," said Tata Power CEO and MD Praveer Sinha.

Expanding Production Capabilities

The solar cells and modules produced at the Tamil Nadu facility will initially support Tata Power's ongoing projects, strengthening its supply chain. The company also plans to explore opportunities for wider market distribution in the future, although specific details were not provided.

In addition to the Tirunelveli plant, Tata Power operates another manufacturing facility in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Established in 1992, this facility has a production capacity of 682 MW for solar modules and 530 MW for solar cells. To date, it has supplied a total of 3.73 GW of solar modules and 2.26 GW of solar cells.

Tata Power's efforts in expanding its manufacturing capabilities are crucial for meeting India's growing energy needs sustainably. The new production lines will help reduce reliance on imported solar components and support large-scale capacity-addition projects across the country.

The company's commitment to enhancing domestic manufacturing aligns with India's broader goals of achieving energy self-sufficiency and reducing carbon emissions. By investing in advanced manufacturing facilities, Tata Power is positioning itself as a key player in the renewable energy sector.

The new facility in Tirunelveli represents a significant milestone in Tata Power's journey towards supporting India's renewable energy targets. As production ramps up, the company aims to contribute significantly to the nation's clean energy landscape.

Tata Power's strategic investments and expansion plans underscore its dedication to fostering sustainable energy solutions. The increased production capacity will not only meet current demands but also pave the way for future growth in the renewable energy sector.

The establishment of these advanced manufacturing facilities marks a pivotal moment for Tata Power and India's renewable energy industry. With continued focus on innovation and sustainability, Tata Power is set to play a leading role in driving the country's transition to clean energy sources.
