Tata Sons Chairman Race: T V Narendran, Saurabh Agrawal and Ashishkumar Chauhan Emerge as Key Contenders
The search for N Chandrasekaran's successor as chairman of Tata Sons is gathering pace, with several prominent business leaders emerging as potential contenders. Tata Steel chief T V Narendran, Tata Sons Executive Director and Group CFO Saurabh Agrawal, and NSE Managing Director and CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan are among the names being discussed, according to people familiar with the development.
However, the selection process remains ongoing, and Tata Sons has not yet taken a final decision on who will lead the conglomerate after Chandrasekaran's tenure ends.
N Chandrasekaran to Complete His Term in February 2027
N Chandrasekaran, who became chairman of Tata Sons in 2017, is currently serving his second five-year term. He has indicated that he will not seek another term after February 20, 2027.

The appointment of his successor will therefore be a major decision for the Tata Group, which is entering an important phase of expansion across several capital-intensive sectors.
The Tata Sons board and Tata Trusts are expected to play a key role in the succession process. Tata Trusts, which control Tata Sons, will have significant influence over the final appointment. Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, is also reported to have discussed potential candidates with senior government leaders.
T V Narendran Emerges as Key Internal Contender
T V Narendran is considered one of the leading internal candidates for the position. Having joined Tata Steel in 1988, he has spent more than three decades with the Tata Group and has led Tata Steel as CEO and managing director for more than 10 years.
During his tenure, Tata Steel has navigated challenging commodity cycles, undertaken significant capital expenditure and managed the complexities of its international operations, particularly in Europe.
Narendran has also held leadership roles outside the company, including serving as chairman of the World Steel Association and president of the Confederation of Indian Industry.
However, the Tata Sons chairmanship would require him to move from leading a major operating company to overseeing a highly diversified portfolio of businesses.
Saurabh Agrawal Brings Group-Level Financial Experience
Saurabh Agrawal represents a different kind of leadership option. As Executive Director and Group CFO of Tata Sons, he has been closely involved in the group's financial strategy, investments and capital allocation since joining the holding company in 2017.
His background includes investment banking, corporate strategy and portfolio management. Before joining Tata Sons, he worked with organisations including DSP Merrill Lynch, Standard Chartered and the Aditya Birla Group.
His experience could become particularly relevant as the Tata Group commits substantial capital to long-term projects in aviation, semiconductors, electric vehicles, batteries and digital platforms.
The key challenge for Agrawal would be expanding from a finance-focused leadership role into the broader public and strategic responsibilities associated with chairing one of India's largest conglomerates.
Ashishkumar Chauhan Seen as an Outside Contender
NSE chief Ashishkumar Chauhan has also emerged as an interesting name in the succession discussions. His career spans technology, capital markets and financial infrastructure.
Chauhan was part of the founding team of the National Stock Exchange and later led BSE before returning to NSE as its managing director and CEO in 2022.
His experience in running major market institutions and dealing with complex regulatory systems could be valuable for the Tata Group, which has a large presence in public markets and financial services.
However, moving from market infrastructure to leading Tata Sons would represent a major shift, given the breadth of businesses under the Tata Group umbrella.
