Tata Trusts Meeting on May 8 to Decide on Leadership: V. Srinivasan’s Role & Bhaskar Bhat Nomination in Focus

Tata Trusts is set to hold a crucial meeting on May 8 to discuss the future direction of Tata Sons. The meeting comes amid growing internal differences over governance, leadership and the company's long-term structure. At the centre of the discussions is the role of Venu Srinivasan, whose continuation as a nominee director on the Tata Sons board is under review.

Trustees are also considering whether to scrap the vice-chairman position within Tata Trusts, currently held by Srinivasan along with Vijay Singh as per Moneycontrol report. These possible changes indicate a broader rethink of representation and influence at the holding company level.

Tata Sons Listing Debate Deepens as Trustees Split Over Private vs Public Structure

A major point of debate is whether Tata Sons should remain privately held or move towards a stock market listing. While Srinivasan and Vijay Singh have previously supported the idea of listing, most trustees are understood to favour retaining the private structure. This difference has widened into a broader discussion on governance and the role of nominee directors in shaping key decisions.

Bhaskar Bhat Emerges as Key Candidate for Tata Sons Nominee Director Role

As per report, trustees are also expected to consider appointing Bhaskar Bhat as a new nominee director on the Tata Sons board. Bhat, a former managing director of Titan Company, recently joined the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust as a trustee and is seen as a strong candidate to fill the vacant position. His experience within the Tata ecosystem could strengthen the Trusts' representation.

Another key agenda item will be a briefing by Noel Tata on concerns raised at an earlier Tata Sons board meeting. These include losses at certain group companies, the need for a clearer long-term business strategy and questions around the future shareholding structure. Businesses such as Air India and Tata Digital had come under focus, prompting calls for a more detailed roadmap.

The future of N Chandrasekaran is also expected to be discussed. Some trustees are believed to favour a formal review of his performance before deciding on any extension of his tenure. Any decision on his continuation would require approval from a majority of Tata Trusts nominees on the Tata Sons board.

Currently, Tata Trusts has two nominee directors on the Tata Sons board-Noel Tata and Venu Srinivasan-while a third position remains vacant. These roles are significant because Trust-nominated directors hold veto powers on major decisions, including strategy, large investments and senior leadership appointments.
