Largest IT services company TCS has asked its 6.14 lakh-plus employees to work from offices, ending the practice of remote working that started due to the pandemic.
India's largest IT services company, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), has announced that it will be ending its remote working practice and asking all of its over 614,000 employees to return to office. This move marks the end of a work-from-home era initiated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Productivity Gains from Co-working

TCS Chief Human Resources Officer Milind Lakkad explained that this decision was taken because of the need to deepen the value systems within their workforce and a belief in productivity gains coming from co-working. He emphasized on integrating new recruits with the larger TCS workforce as an essential step for them to understand and internalize TCS values.
The '25 by 25' Agenda
In response to queries about whether this move meant scrapping their '25 by 25' agenda - aiming at reducing physical presence in offices to just 25% by 2025 - Lakkad said that they couldn't confirm such an assumption. However, N Ganapathy Subramaniam, COO of TCS, suggested that one could deduce this agenda may now be less focused upon given current circumstances.
High Attrition Rates
The high attrition rates over the last three years have made it necessary for all staff members to return back to offices according to Subramaniam. He added that around 70% of their employees have already started returning back.
Impact on Profit Margins
TCS CFO Samir Seksaria assured stakeholders that bringing people back into offices would not significantly impact profit margins. The company had maintained its office spaces even during the pandemic period with no plans of giving up on them despite moving towards a work-from-home model when lockdowns were imposed due to Covid-19.
Recalibrated Hiring Strategies
Lakkad also acknowledged a decline in the overall staff count, attributing it to slower new hiring compared to attrition rates. TCS has recalibrated its hiring strategies and is honouring all offers for freshers' intake. However, business requirements may lead to delays in joining dates.
Fresher Hire Target Maintained
TCS continues with its fresher hire target of 40,000 for the current fiscal year and is actively seeking recruits on campuses. The company is witnessing a surge in its joining ratio as more freshers are accepting their job offers. Lakkad further stated that headcount should not be equated with business growth, emphasizing the concept of non-linearity.
In conclusion, TCS's decision marks a significant shift from remote working back towards traditional office-based work culture reflecting their belief in productivity gains from co-working and need for value integration within their workforce. This move could potentially set a precedent for other IT firms contemplating similar decisions amidst easing pandemic restrictions.
