TCS, IIT-Bombay Unite to Forge India’s First Quantum Diamond Microchip Imager

In a significant stride towards enhancing the reliability and efficiency of electronic devices, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-Bombay) have embarked on a pioneering project to create India's first advanced sensing tool for semiconductor chips. This collaboration marks a notable development in the field of semiconductor research within the country.

India’s First Quantum Chip Imager

The initiative aims to introduce a quantum imaging platform designed for the non-destructive examination of semiconductor chips, thereby minimizing the risk of chip failures. As part of a strategic partnership, TCS and IIT-Bombay will work on developing the Quantum Diamond Microchip Imager, a tool expected to bring unprecedented precision in chip examination processes.

Over the forthcoming two years, specialists from TCS will collaborate with Kasturi Saha, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT-Bombay. Their joint efforts will be concentrated in the PQuest Lab, focusing on leveraging quantum sensing technology to innovate and enhance chip examination methods.

The Quantum Diamond Microchip Imager is set to revolutionize the way semiconductor chips are examined by enabling non-invasive and non-destructive mapping. This technology utilizes Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centres found in diamonds, along with sophisticated hardware and software, to detect and analyze anomalies within semiconductor chips effectively.

Associate Professor Kasturi Saha expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with TCS, highlighting the potential impact of this technology on various sectors including electronics and healthcare. By combining their expertise in quantum sensing with TCS's technological prowess, they aim to propel India forward through innovative breakthroughs.

A Strategic Alignment with National Goals

Harrick Vin, Chief Technology Officer at TCS, emphasized the alignment of this initiative with the National Quantum Mission's Quantum Sensing and Metrology vertical. He expressed confidence that this collaboration would significantly benefit various industries and society at large, with potential applications extending beyond electronics to healthcare and more.

This partnership between TCS and IIT-Bombay not only underscores the commitment of both institutions to advancing technological innovation but also sets a precedent for future research and development in India's semiconductor industry.
