American tech giant Oracle Corporation has laid off around 10% of its employees in India, leaving several skilled professionals jobless overnight. The company has officially termed the move a part of "restructuring," but industry experts are linking it to a shift in US policy under President Donald Trump's renewed focus on curbing offshoring and reducing reliance on H-1B visas.
Major Layoff in Oracle: India Among Worst-Hit Regions
According to a report by Data Centre Dynamics, Oracle's Indian operations have been among the worst hit, even as job cuts continue in other countries. Teams working on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) in the US are still being informed of layoffs, and employees in Canada and Mexico have also reportedly received notices.

In India, Oracle employed close to 28,824 people as of 2024, contributing to the company's total global headcount of around 1.62 lakh in 2025. With a large presence in software development, cloud services, and technical support, India has been a key talent hub for the company. The sudden job losses are expected to have a significant impact on the local IT workforce.
For more than two decades, Oracle has firmly established its presence in India, with offices spread across key metropolitan hubs like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune, Noida, and Kolkata. Now, the tech giant is widening its reach beyond metros, actively focusing on Tier-II and Tier-III cities through its geo-expansion initiative. Cities such as Chandigarh, Lucknow, Jaipur, Bhopal, and Thiruvananthapuram are part of this next phase of Oracle's regional growth strategy.
Layoffs in Oracle Begin Globally
While India has taken a major hit, Oracle has also begun layoffs in Seattle, where it is eliminating more than 150 positions - mostly in the cloud infrastructure unit. As per sources, affected employees were informed earlier this week that their roles were being dissolved. However, the company continues to hire for certain roles, indicating a targeted restructuring rather than a company-wide downsizing.
Insiders say that the job cuts are being linked to performance, but many believe the move is also influenced by changing geo-political dynamics and pressure to localise operations in key markets.
Adding to the speculation is the timing of the layoffs, which came just days after Oracle CEO Larry Wilson met US President Donald Trump at the White House on 7 August. The meeting reportedly focused on domestic hiring, national data security, and tech partnerships.
Soon after, Oracle announced a high-profile deal with OpenAI, under which massive volumes of OpenAI's data will now be hosted on Oracle's cloud infrastructure. At the same time, Oracle has launched a large hiring drive in its Virginia office in the US, a move that has raised concerns about job displacement from countries like India.
In Mexico, too, Oracle employees have reportedly received layoff notices, and staff in other countries have been scheduled for undisclosed meetings, hinting at more global job cuts in the coming days.
Will It Impact Indian IT Talent?
The layoffs in India are especially concerning given the country's strong dependence on global tech firms for employment in IT and software development. With Oracle being a long-standing employer of Indian tech talent, the sudden cuts are expected to disrupt careers and increase job insecurity in the sector.
Industry watchers fear that this could be the beginning of a broader trend among US-based tech companies, especially as domestic political pressures continue to drive inward-looking hiring policies in the West.
