At a recent event marking World Telecom and Information Society Day, Telecom Secretary Neeraj Mittal emphasized the critical role of high-speed data in driving sustainable development. The event, organized by the Department of Telecom, served as a platform for Mittal to highlight the significant advancements in data speed over the past few years, noting an increase from 13-14 megabits per second (Mbps) to approximately 76 Mbps.

Mittal underscored the importance of leveraging 5G technology and its potential evolution into 6G for enhancing various sectors such as weather forecasting, smart city development, resource management, and satellite imaging. He pointed out that the true value of these technological investments hinges on their application across these critical areas.
The Telecom Secretary also praised the response of startups to the call for innovation in this space. He highlighted the support mechanisms put in place by the department, including the Digital Communication Innovation Square (DCIS) and the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF). These initiatives have been instrumental in fostering entrepreneurship and innovation within the telecom sector, enabling solutions to both minor and significant challenges.
Furthermore, Mittal drew attention to the establishment of 100 5G use cases labs across India. These labs are pivotal in exploring the potential of 5G technology by facilitating the development of relevant applications. He encouraged industry players to collaborate with these labs to further expand and refine 5G use cases.
The call to action by Mittal is not just about adopting new technologies but also about ensuring that these technologies are directed towards meaningful applications that contribute to societal progress. The emphasis on sustainable development through high-speed data underscores a broader vision where technology serves as a cornerstone for addressing contemporary challenges and enhancing quality of life.
