In an official statement, the NTA said the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had issued directions under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, restricting access to the Telegram platform in India until June 22, covering the examination period and its immediate aftermath.

The government has also directed Telegram to disable its message-editing feature in India until June 30. Telegram Restriction Details

The NTA said the action has been taken after months of monitoring by multiple agencies, including the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), state police departments, and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Authorities found out that many Telegram channels, groups, and bots that openly advertised fraudulent services related to the NEET-UG examination. These channels allegedly claimed to provide access to question papers and answer keys in exchange for large sums of money from students and their families.

Message Editing Feature

NTA talked about a major concern which is Telegram's message-editing feature. Officials said the feature allowed users to alter the content of previously posted messages, including attached files such as PDFs, while preserving the original posting time.

According to the agency, "This functionality had been used in several recent examinations to create misleading narratives suggesting that question papers had been circulated before the exam".

Telegram Ban Temporary

This is not a permanent ban on Telegram in India, NTA said that the restrictions are limited and will remain in force only until June 22, while the message-editing restriction will continue until June 30 for the smooth conduct of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination
