Global electric vehicle (EV) giant Tesla is set to make its long-awaited entry into India with the official opening of its first showroom in Mumbai next week, according to a Reuters report. The launch event, scheduled for July 15, will take place at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), one of Mumbai's most prominent commercial hubs.
Tesla's Entry in India
In a statement, Tesla confirmed that the Mumbai event will mark the formal "launch of Tesla in India through the opening of the Tesla experience centre at Bandra Kurla Complex."

$1 Million Worth of EVs and Gear Imported
Ahead of the launch, Tesla has imported electric vehicles and related equipment worth nearly $1 million into India. Commercial shipping records reviewed by Reuters show the imports occurred between January and June 2025, with goods arriving from both China and the United States.
The shipments included six units of the Tesla Model Y SUV. Five standard units were priced at approximately $32,500 each, while one long-range version was listed at $46,000. In addition, Tesla also imported Superchargers and branded merchandise as part of its initial retail and infrastructure setup.
High Import Duties Remain a Challenge for Tesla in India
Tesla's decision to import cars for retail sale comes despite India's steep import duties-around 70% on fully built EVs. This suggests that Tesla is opting to test Indian consumer interest before committing to local manufacturing.
The company's cautious approach aligns with broader challenges it faces globally, including excess production capacity and waning demand in mature EV markets like the U.S. and Europe.
No Manufacturing Commitment Yet
While the Indian government has actively courted Tesla with proposals and a new EV policy aimed at encouraging domestic production, the company has not yet committed to setting up a manufacturing facility in the country. Last year, CEO Elon Musk was widely expected to announce a $2-3 billion investment during a visit to India, but the trip was postponed indefinitely.
Government officials have stated that Tesla has expressed a preference to first explore the Indian market by selling imported vehicles and assessing local demand.
Recruitment and Expansion Plans Underway
Tesla's India entry has been months in the making. Earlier this year, the company began recruiting for several roles related to sales, service, and store management. It has since expanded hiring to include positions in supply chain operations and autonomous driving technology-indicating long-term interest in building a footprint in the country.
Global Politics and Trade Tensions
U.S. President Donald Trump weighed in on Tesla's India move, stating that if the company were to build cars in India as a way to bypass American tariffs, it would be "unfair" to the United States.
