Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh emphasises the need for the cotton industry to work closely with farmers to improve seed quality and productivity. He highlights the impact of climate change on cotton farming and announces efforts to promote India's Kasturi brand globally.
Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh urged the cotton industry to collaborate more with farmers to enhance seed quality and boost cotton productivity. During World Cotton Day, organised by the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI), Singh highlighted that climate change-induced unseasonal rains could impact cotton yields. He emphasised the textile sector's role in addressing climate issues.

Singh announced efforts to promote India's Kasturi brand internationally, similar to branded cotton from Egypt and the US. "An MoU has been signed today. Through this, we will take India's Kasturi brand cotton globally," Singh stated at the event. The government is working on an export strategy targeting 40 countries through their embassies.
Focus on Sustainability and Export Promotion
The minister noted that despite a global interest in synthetic fibres, cotton's sustainability offers a promising future. The branding of Kasturi Cotton could be enhanced with active participation from organisations like CITI and TEXPROCIL. Singh also aims to promote fibres like linen, milkweed, and Ramie due to their growth potential.
Textiles Secretary Neelam Shami Rao mentioned plans to increase cotton production by 50% in the coming years, including expanding Kasturi Cotton Bharat's capacity. Efforts are underway to reduce contamination in the cotton sector and improve farming practices in India.
Government Initiatives and Global Outreach
The minister shared that the Indian textiles industry recently participated in an exhibition in Russia, receiving a positive response. This aligns with the government's strategy to boost exports and reach out to international markets through diplomatic channels.
Singh highlighted the government's commitment to farmer welfare through increased minimum support prices (MSP) over the past decade. This initiative reflects the government's dedication to supporting farmers' interests and improving their livelihoods.
As part of the broader strategy, there is a focus on enhancing productivity within the cotton sector. This includes adopting better farming practices and reducing contamination levels, which are crucial for maintaining quality standards.
The minister's remarks underscore the importance of sustainability in the textile industry. By promoting natural fibres and improving production methods, India aims to strengthen its position in the global market while addressing environmental concerns.
