Since Pongal is 4 days long, and each day has its own significance. The celebration for Pongal 2026 began today with Bhogi, when people clean their homes and discard old items in the bonfire.

Tomorrow Thai Pongal, also called the Surya Pongal, will be celebrated. This is the main day of the festival when families prepare the traditional Pongal dish and perform special prayers.

On Friday, Jan 16, Mattu Pongal will be celebrated, in which cattle worship is performed, as they are an important part of agriculture. Animals are decorated, fed special treats, and prayed for.

The last and the final day is Kanum Pongal, which will be celebrated on Saturday, January 17.

Thai Pongal 2026 Rituals and Traditions

One of the most iconic rituals of Thai Pongal is the preparation of the Pongal dish, made using rice, milk, and jaggery. The dish is cooked outdoors in a new clay pot until it boils over, a ritual known as "Pongal oothum". Homes are decorated with kolam, which is basically rangoli drawn using rice flour; mango leaves are hung at entrances, and households wear traditional attire such as veshti and sarees.

According to Drik Panchnaghe, the Sankranti moment associated with Pongal occurs around 3:13 PM on January 15. Many families perform prayers during the early morning Brahma Muhurat, 05:05 AM to 05:55 AM, which is regarded as ideal for religious rituals.
