Thalapathy Vijay-Sangeetha Divorce Case: Court Defers Hearing to Aug 7; How Alimony & Property Rules May Apply
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Thalapathy Vijay and his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam's divorce proceedings witnessed another development on Monday, June 15, as the Chengalpattu Mahila Court adjourned the matter and fixed the next hearing for August 7.
Thalapathy Vijay-Sangeetha Divorce Case: Court Defers Hearing to August 7
The legal dispute comes after Sangeetha Sornalingam reportedly approached the family court seeking dissolution of her marriage with Vijay. The couple registered their marriage in the United Kingdom in 1998 and later held a traditional wedding ceremony in Chennai in 1999. They share two children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Sasha.

Earlier, the matter had been listed for hearing in April, when both parties were reported to have been absent and represented through their respective lawyers. Following this, the court directed their personal appearance at the subsequent hearing held on June 15. According to reports, both parties appeared before the court, following which the matter was adjourned to August 7.
Vijay-Trisha Krishnan Link in Divorce Reports: What the Petition Allegedly Reveals
According to media reports, the divorce petition has been filed under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. The filing reportedly cites grounds including cruelty, alleged adultery and irretrievable breakdown of the marital relationship.
The petition reportedly states that Sangeetha came to know in April 2021 about Vijay's alleged relationship with actress Trisha Krishnan . While the legal documents do not mention any individual by name, public speculation has linked the allegation to Trisha Krishnan, who has worked with Vijay in multiple films.
The petition further claims that despite alleged assurances that the relationship would end, Vijay continued to travel and make public appearances with the actress. These allegations form part of the claims made by the petitioner, and the court has not made any findings on their truthfulness.
What Happens Next in Vijay-Sangeetha Divorce Case? Maintenance, Alimony and Other Legal Issues May Rise
A divorce petition marks the beginning of legal proceedings and does not automatically dissolve a marriage. The court will examine pleadings, responses from both sides, and any evidence presented before reaching a conclusion.
In matrimonial disputes, family courts may also explore possibilities of mediation and settlement before moving forward with detailed evidence. Any requests related to maintenance, financial support, residence rights, legal expenses, or other interim relief are considered based on the facts placed before the court.
Will Vijay Have to Share His Wealth With Wife Sangeetha? What Indian Family Laws Say
Since Vijay and Sangeetha's marriage was reportedly registered under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, the court will decide any issue related to maintenance or financial support based on several factors, including the income, assets, financial condition and circumstances of both parties.
Indian law does not automatically give a spouse 50 percent share in the other partner's wealth after divorce. Instead, the court will examine the claims made by both sides and decide a fair financial arrangement based on the facts of the case.
This is based on Section 37 of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, which gives the court the power to grant permanent alimony and determine the amount after considering the circumstances of the parties.
Since Vijay and Sangeetha's children are adults or close to adulthood, issues related to child custody may not become a major aspect of the proceedings. However, privacy, personal reputation and the emotional impact of a prolonged legal battle remain significant considerations.
When is Vijay's Divorce Next Hearing?
The next hearing in the Vijay-Sangeetha divorce case is scheduled for August 7, when the court is expected to take up the matter further.
