The almost half-a-year-long extravaganza leading up to the most lavish wedding ceremony of the country's richest business tycoon Mukesh Ambani's son, Anant Ambani, has not only brought the who's who of the celluloid world and the global business community to the dance floors, but it has also turned the eyeballs of the global media towards the Mumbai-based business family and its brand, Reliance.
Unlike many Indian millionaires (and billionaires), Ambani's choice of holding the events in India has given the local economy a significant boost. The star-studded ceremonies have also given the family's corporate brand, Reliance, a leg up on the global stage, according to experts.

While the global business community is no stranger to the brand Reliance or the Ambanis - the richest family from India for decades - this time, it's for the masses to get acquainted with the brand. The months-long rituals leading up to the wedding held on 12 July, have also been a boon for local artisans and businesses.
According to estimates by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), the country's apex industry body of traders and retailers, nearly 5,000 affluent couples hold wedding ceremonies in foreign locations each year. Together, they deprive local businesses of Rs 75,000 crore to Rs 1 lakh crore in income annually. Additionally, since the money is spent in other countries, the Indian exchequer also loses out on income from taxes and cess.
Typically, in a wedding, nearly 80% of the expenditure is incurred on goods and services. This money flows into the local market, enabling financial liquidity as the cash gets rotated several times, changing hands. Therefore, it helps the economy.
In 2024, local businesses are expecting a boost of Rs 4.74 lakh crore from the 38 lakh marriage ceremonies set to take place over the next few months. This number is almost 26% higher than the total wedding season business in the previous season, pegged at Rs 3.75 lakh crore. Last year, around 3.2 million weddings took place during the same period.
The grand wedding of Anant Ambani has served as a catalyst for this economic boom. The meticulous planning and execution of the wedding ceremonies spread over several months, have involved a multitude of local vendors, artisans, and businesses. From intricate decorations, lavish venues, and elaborate catering to custom-made outfits and luxurious accommodations, the wedding has provided employment opportunities and financial benefits to thousands.
The grandeur of the Ambani wedding has also put the spotlight on Reliance Industries. Known for its extensive ventures in petrochemicals, refining, oil, telecommunications, and retail, Reliance has been a household name in India. However, the wedding has amplified its presence on the global stage.
The participation of international celebrities has played a crucial role in this. The performances by global icons such as Justin Bieber and Rihanna have not only entertained the attendees but also captured the attention of millions worldwide through social media. The stories and posts about the wedding have trended across various platforms, further enhancing the visibility of the Ambani family and Reliance.
Hosting the wedding in India, amidst such opulence, can be seen as a strategic move by the Ambanis. By choosing to celebrate in India, the Ambani family has showcased their focus and belief in the potential of the local market.
This decision also aligns with the broader trend of 'Make in India' and supporting local businesses. The ripple effects of such a high-profile event are vast, benefiting not just the vendors directly involved but also inspiring other wealthy families to consider hosting their celebrations within the country.
Anant Ambani's wedding has been more than just a social event. It has been a significant economic stimulus for local businesses and a marketing masterstroke for the Reliance brand. The blend of traditional Indian grandeur with international celebrity allure has set a new benchmark for weddings in India.
